Title: WIFE, GIRLFRIEND, OR SIGNIFICANT OTHER
Post by: MameMaster! on July 28, 2003, 02:43:39 pm
 ;D

Greets all.

I don't know if this poll has come up yet, but I thought it would be fun to see the results.

Personally, at first my wife thought it was interesting that I pulled it off (my fully functional cab)  .....but.....now that it's been almost a year of tweeking; redoing the wiring; now decorating the environment.... etc. etc. she thinks I'm a total geek.

Oh well, at least I'm not at the nudie bar (Uh, OK....just sometimes).

My wife wants me to hurry up and finish the first one so I can start the second and third..... ::)

She's even talking about how we can redo the basement to create a arcade room.....  $ :o ?$

GAWD I love her...... ;D

My girlfriend was more interested in the beginning, but she's getting tired of hearing about it now when she asks what I did today and I tell her "I won an Ebay auction for more arcade parts" or "I was just messing with my machine".

The misses is pretty cool about it. Just gotta hide those reciepts  ;)

At first she really didnt want it and insisted that I make a tiny one cause it was gonna be too big and clunky.

But I think shes grown to appreciate it.

I say all this and its not even up and running yet  ;D

I get quite a lot of "no you can't have an extra $100/week to spend on it".
However I originally bought a cab for a 19" vertical monitor back when I was only going to build the one cab ( quite an old classic looking cab ). I recently bought a huge modern cab with a 26" horizontal monitor and my wife says the 19" is now hers and when am I going to finish mine so I can work on hers and she can play MsPacman and Frogger LMAO.
So it's all good, she's a cool chick ( and she has been telling me to get a hobby, so she only has herself to blame lol )

I am working on my second cab. My first cab took very little effort outside of the internals and software. The cab I am working on now was a Pac-Man converted to a Gun.Smoke converted to a Time Soldiers converted to a Superstars of Wrestling. It was covered in a horrible yellow formica, the bottom had heavy water damage, and the cab under the formica had deep, heavy scratches in the plywood. Needless to say, I have put a lot of work into the cabinet.

I wait until my wife is sleeping before I work on the cab. Not good enough. She hates it. I usually work on it five hours a night so I get to bed pretty close to three  A.M. I then wake up tired and feel worn out for the rest of the day. However, I can't work on it during the daytime because my wife finds any reason to harass me while I work.

It took several years for her to come to terms with my computer gaming hobby. Now she is having trouble with me sitting behind a cabinet with a wire stripper and a soldering gun instead of sitting in front of a computer conquering Europe. But I enjoy it, it clears my head, and I feel productive while I am on summer break.

As for my old machine... She has played Tetris on it a few times, and I introduced her to Bubble Bobble (which she liked) but otherwise, it is just another piece of my junk in the basement. :/

Some people will never understand it or appreciate it... Most people can't even understand what an accomplishment it is, and SOME poeple have never played an arcade game in their life except maybe once or twice cuz it was there.

Ain't that the truth!...I can't tell you how many times my wife has given me a "look" when she asked what I was up to (usually playing with or tweeking my machine).

Last night I just discovered a new love ZiNc. Not as cool as mame, but a new thing for me to add to my cab!  :o

My fiance was VERY skeptical at first regarding the cost.  I would get excited when the frame was together, or when parts arrived, and she would just roll her eyes. Now that the thing is remotely together and she can actually play it, she likes it allot.  And is very supportive of my hobby now.  ;D

She's a huge fan of the Tetris Plus series, and now that I got my trackball in finally she is hopelessly addicted to the Irritating Maze...

She plays quite a bit of Monster Bash in VP also.

Now she's buggin me to get the Steering wheels hooked up so she can race me in Ivan Stewart's Super Sprint, and all the others.

The other day I mentioned that I want to conquer a cocktail cab next, then covered my head expecting to get hit, but she's kinda excited to see what it will be like.

I guess i'm one of the lucky ones  ;D

My wife was initially very reluctant, but once I put a jukebox in it, she brightened up.  She will play the occasional game of Centipede, but plays the jukebox all the time.  Since she's seen how much our daughter and her friends have enjoyed it, she's become much more supportive of it, although she still plays it only rarely.

Well I've got a gf, but no wife. So I don't have to worry about someone else's permission and acceptance of the thing. However, she still doesn't like that sometimes I end up spending more time working on that thing than with her (even though it's while she is in class or work or doing something else).

I used to keep her updated and she used to be interested. I keep telling her I'll let her be the first person to play it. However, I don't really think she cares anymore. This upgrade has taken almost 2 months now, and I'm not done.

I think our relationship has improved a little since I ran out of money to fix that thing. (Here we go again, though. Just got some cash for my bday.)

When I have women over at my place, be it a friend or a date, they always think the arcade cab is cool.  I think just about everybody has that one arcade game they love, be it from their 7-11, mall, local bar, what have you.  They just think the idea is cool, and I'd have to agree with them :)

I had to hide my money order receipts from my fiancee but wouldn't you know it ? she found one in the console of my truck and of course it was one from a complete tron control panel that I had got on Ebay which was over a hundred bucks. ::) She blew a gasket cuz I was supposed to be saving for the wedding. ::) ::). The first machine has been done for a while and she now has a little list of all the games she frequently plays. ;) Sooner or later they get hooked on at least one game. You just have to keep them in the dark when it comes to the financial end of the project. 8)

My current (sort of) girl lives out of town and has never seen any of my games. I have talked about them a bit though. She is kind of too young (22) to remember the classic era though. It was over before she was old enough to reach the panel.

Previous girlfriend, totally and completely ignored the line of games in my dining room. I don't even think she ever even played the Turbo (and everyone plays Turbo!)

The one before that, looked at them, and was supportive, but never played them, but would giggle sometimes when the Star Wars cantina music would waft in from the other room while we were in bed.

My friend's wife on the other hand. She totally ignored the row of 4 games (mine) in his basement, except that sometimes she played Turbo, and she wanted them out by the time they got married. That changed slightly once I switched one for a pinball. I sold the other 3, but she plays the pinball all the time. (I am kind of scared she is going to wear the thing out before I can even get it over to my place, last I checked it had racked up 2800 games since I brought it over there). She has (multiple times) expressed much interest in the area of Ms. Pac-Man cocktail tables, If she was my woman I would buy her one, but she isn't, so I am not going to.

My FIVE girlfriends from Canada all think it's the greatest thing ever, and they all love me so much they give me free money and like to share me whenever they can and......

*slap"  wake up stupid!!!

Whoops, oh yeah.....  my wife thinks it's sorta cool, but that I spent too much money and won't let me keep it in any common area because it "doesn't go" with anything.  :)  So I actually would need to be able to select more than one item.  LOL  :)

Isn't it funny that your Wife or Girlfriend (or both if you're lucky!  ;) )....doesn't hestitate to spend $100. bucks on shoes....(at least 1 a month)....but when you spend $50 bucks on stuff for your hobby..... :o she freaks.

.....oh well. That's what the pimp hand is for......

(just kidding guys.....if there's any discipline in my house....my wife dishes it out....I guess she has the pimp hand then!).

My wife does not appreciate my cabinet and gets upset when people come over and take a tour of our new house and all gravitate towards my cabinet.  And any time I want to purchase something for it I am like, "um, honey, um you know that handbag you saw at the store, the new Kate $pade, why don't you get that for your self, and by the way I saw this coin door that would be perfect for my cabinet and is dirt cheap, I will even sell some old video games to cover the cost."  I am so whipped!!!

Whenever I get wrapped up in a cabinet project, my wife joking refers to it as "the other woman".  She's cool with it though, and she just got me a new Ryobi router for my birthday that I'm dying to try out.  :)

And I also used the line of "At least I'm not out blowing money on cocaine and hookers!"  So yeah.

That's a good one. I do something similar, whenever I get complaints about cost I remind her about her best friend husband who recently took up SCUBA diving, now there's an expensive hobby.
She's usually says something like "BUT I'M NOT MARRIED TO HIM I'M MARRIED TO YOU!!!!" LMAO

My wife doesnt like puzzle bobble that much actually, but she does like Uo Poko, and super puzzle fighter 2.   Occasionally she'll play a game of Frogger, Pac Man, or StepMania.  I showed her Attax but it was "too gross" for her....
