Title: [ADVICE] Connecting PC to UK SCART tv through s-vid or DVI?
Post by: Rusty Shackelford on March 13, 2010, 12:15:13 pm
Hi Guys

I was going to connect my PC to TV using the 15khz programe and a hacked VGA to scart lead but im not at all elecricly minded and im also not a fan of hack jobs.
I had a look at the rear of the pc to find three ports:

1.VGA (called CRT?)
2. S-video
3.DVI

Would options 2 or 3 give a better result?
Also am I right in thinking I would still need to use 15khz?

Thanks in advance

What kind of TV is it?

CRT?  LCD? Plasma? DLP?

If it's a CRT then I would see if it's possible to send VGA video over that DVI port.  DVI cables have VGA connectors built right into them.  If you could do that, and the tv could accept the 15khz signal it would be perfect.

If it's an LCD/Plasma/DLP then also use the DVI port, but don't worry about Soft 15khz.  It won't do anything to help you in that case.

You could try this (http://www.cable-trader.co.uk/items/scart-to-vga-cable-2m)

The only issue with VGA to scart is that VGA outputs the video timing information on two wires (horizontal and vertical sync) while scart expects one signal (composite sync). You can usually get away with connecting the two wires together at the vga end of the cable (pins 13 and 14). The cable probably only connects pin 13. If you get the cable and it doesn't work open up the vga end and bridge the two pins. You will need soft 15khz to output to the TV as the frequency put out by the PC otherwise will be too high for the TV (Assumung a non HD set).

Most video cards can do composite sync if you ask.  The driver doesn't always expose the option in an easy to find way, though.  You also often have control over the sync polarity.  PC convention is to output composite sync on the horizontal sync line.

If you can only get separate, you can combine them externally.  Simply connecting the two sync outputs from the PC together is not really recommended, though it will often work.  "Proper" composite sync is the exclusive OR of the two, but something that usually works can be produced using a couple resistors (which are often already present on the PC side, hence why connecting the two together often works).

EDIT: read his post wrong.  He has DVI on the back of the pc, not the TV.

Its a CRT tv.
