Yeah we watched it Friday night. It had some entertaining SFX here and there, but for the most part was pretty lame-o.

Set your logic bar REALLY low, and you'll at least be able to make it through the movie. I can't stress enough how low that bar will have to be set though.

Stargate and Independence Day are the only two films from Emerich I've watched. I gave up after that.

We watched it last night.  It is entertaining...in a sense that you have to dumb yourself down.  But you have to do that for any of the summer special effect blockbusters.  I thought the vehicles continuously rolling just far enough ahead of the crumbling ground was particularly bad, even for the effects.

When the plane initially left the runway going through the crumbling highways and stuff was pretty neat looking.

Woody Harrelson was awesome.  Easily the bright spot of the movie.  Looking forward to Zombieland now.

This is nonsense.  If you want to say it was so hilariously bad that it was . . . well . . . hilarious, that's one thing.  But you can't give it a pass on quality based on some crazy idea that this kind of movie doesn't need quality.  2012 is ---smurfing--- horrible, including compared to plenty of special effect blockbusters.  Spiderman 1 & 2, Iron Man, Forest Gump, Terminator 1 & 2, Star Wars IV, V & VI, Star Trek (a few of them), The Matrix, Gladiator (kind of bad, but amazing compared to 2012), Lord or the Rings, X-Men, Jurassic Park, Jaws, etc., etc., etc..  Seriously, I could go on and on.

2012 is far from most "summer blockbuster". its on a whole new level of fail.

That was also my favorite part of the movie. Pretty well done

Although it did kind of beg the question, why not just turn?  LAX is on the ocean.

That's pretty much what I meant, yes.

As soon as we saw the Sistine Chapel...the entire world watching knew damn well where it would crack.

Shall we say "attempt at a blockbuster", then? (Looks like it was released in Nov.)  Movies can be particularly bad, yet still do well at the box office, hence "blockbuster".  I don't believe the term connotes "good movie."  I assume this was, since it grossed nearly $770 million so far worldwide.  Boxofficemojo shows around 84% gave it a C or better (A-D,F scale).

And you all know you liked Wood...y in it.

Movies with very thin or non-existant plot-lines tend to do well in the US. (hence why there is more than one Mummy movie)

It's hard to say for sure, pinball, but I think you are trying to refute RayB's point.  In fact you are reinforcing it.  Worldwide is not a nation.  The EU alone has over 500 million people in it, not to mention markets in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia.  By your numbers it's hard to believe that the Mummy had a better showing anywhere outside of the US.

Take the Domestic gross and subtract the U.S. Gross.

202 million - 155 million = 47 million for Canada vs 155 million for the U.S.   Canada's population is roughly 1/10 of the U.S.  Assuming ticket prices are the same, per capita, the Mummy made 3 times the revenue in Canada than it did in the U.S.

I saw this movie in theaters opening night (only because my friend works at the local theater)  Although I did not pay for this movie I still enjoyed it.  I kind of want to buy this on bluray just for the first half.  I'm a big sucker for end of the world movies.

What I liked about this one was how the action was spread out beginning to end and isn't like the others where it takes the whole movie to build up to it.  I also loved how everything was filmed pretty much at ground zero.  I'm so sick of these movies always cheating by using these wide panoramic shots from the sky.  The cg was pretty good, sure as hell beat that one movie day after tomorrow with those crappy cg wolves.. epic fail

What I disliked was the last 45 minutes or so.. or whenever the whole boarding the ark thing started.  Just seemed like there was too much stuff going on at once.. Oh no the gears are jammed, door won't shut, countdown clock, lets think about if we should let all the people who built these things get on, someone's drowning in one of the rooms, were gonna run into an iceberg.. It just was chaos jumpin from one thing to another and I just wanted it to end.

I'm not a Canuckist.  I have friends that are Canucks.  I even use to work for a Canucker company.

I believe some like to have their minds entertained, and some like to have their senses entertained (and some like their senses entertained but only within a specific ruleset (such as not too many leaps in logic). The reason why a movie like 2012 is so successful is because there are a lot of people who want exactly that: to have their senses entertain and to escape from reality for a couple of hours, logic be damned.

Naturally, the best form of escapism is a movie that manages to do both, but someone enjoying a movie like 2012 doesn't mean they have bad taste, or that they are stupid (not that anyone is implying this), or whatever else, it just means they like to see crap blow up.  If it's entertaining to them, so be it.

My take: haven't seen it yet but it's a type of movie that will surely look and sound great on a good home theatre, which I have so yeah; I'm looking forward to seeing "---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- get blown up".  I do have my limits at times (depending on my mood I guess) so we'll see how it goes.

I just watched "The Core" last night. Oh wow. It's even worse, but almost the same movie!

2012: 2.5/5
The Core: 1/5

By the way, The Core had an alloy called "Unobtanium".  Hmmmm. Nobody told James Cameron?

Unobtainium is an engineering/scientific term that has been around a long time.

It's also the trademark name used by Oakley for that sticky rubber they use on the earpieces of sunglasses.

I saw the Core in the theater....  I knew going in that it was going to be horrible, but it was the last weekend everyone was together at college and we wanted to see something, so we decided to sit in the back and make fun of the movie while watching it.  Good times.

Oh and daywane, I have another movie that I'll think you'll love:
Birdemic: Shock And Terror Official Theatrical Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnNvBucoNSY#ws)

:laugh2:  looks about the same quality as those Asylum Production mockbuster movies...  Man I seriously hate them so much with a passion.. who the  :censored: keeps giving them the green light??  I rented 2 one time with some friends just to drink and laugh at them.. we weren't laughing, it was that bad.  Transmorphers, the entire movie wasn't even synced up with their lips.. was like a whole 3 seconds off.  Oh and Monster was the other one (Cloverfield) was supposed to be taking place in Japan or something but I totally recognized the anime stores in the background, they filmed it on the streets of China Town in Downtown LA..  and what was sad was the entire film was supposed to be these 2 girls alone in the city because it was evacuated.. but you could still hear the homeless people in the background pushing their shopping carts.. not even joking.. go rent it.. you'll hear shopping carts
