Title: HL2 Survivor machines
Post by: GaryMcT on February 15, 2010, 04:21:55 am
I helped a friend at work move these to his house today from work:

These are fairly unique I think.  A friend that was in Japan says that he only ever saw sit down versions.  I think these must have been prototypes. . not really sure.  These two connect together with another piece in the middle to make one big game for two people to play co-op, story mode, etc.

I've only seen pics of the sit-down version. These stand-up ones are pretty awesome. Did you have a hand in the software on these at all? (Other than pre-existing code)

I think I answered a few questions for those guys, but they really did a ton of work with no help from us at all.  I'll have to go and play it again soon. :)  It's definitely more on rails than regular HL2. . almost feels like it could easily be a lightgun game.

Man you are so freaking lucky to be working at Valve! Did you help make Left 4 Dead? And any of the Half Life games? That is so cool!

Wow those are dope!

I love the sub exposed above the coin door. Slick looking cab for sure. I wouldn't mind using that design as a starting point for my scratch build later on this year. Your friend is lucky! Did he get them for free?

Here's a vid of one of them in the wild (the sit down shipped version):

I started working here when we started on Half-Life 2.  I've worked on pretty much everything since then to some degree.  I did a lot of work on L4D1 and 2.

Money would have been well spent if they made a new half life shooter or a portal type of game for the arcade, never mind half life 2..which not to knock it is one of my fav's of all time

I started playing HL2 again a couple weeks ago. It's amazing how much that game sucks you in.

The game doesn't just 'suck you in' but it ages very well.  Late 2004, the first Half-Life 2 witout any of that HDR stuff they put in episode 1, and it's still PRETTY.  If you compare it to say it's contemporaries of the time, most are pretty ugly with the exception of Doom 3.

I would say Far Cry is 2004's engine/graphics champion, but HL2 holds up well.
