The NEW Build Your Own Arcade Controls

Did some searching on the forum and couldn't find anyone who asked this question.
I have a pretty basic cab built from the Project Arcade plans with a 3/4" control panel. I purchased some Happ Universal joysticks to replace my Happ Supers for better 4-way games. To mount the Supers I just drilled a 1 1/8" hole and screwed them in, no routering or anything.
The Universal's threads aren't long enough to tighten the plastic nut and the rubber washer on the panel. Will the Universal be secure enough without the rubber washer or should I router the control panel to have enough room for the washer and nut?
I've linked a picture to try and explain it better: http://www.flickr.com/photos/86873853@N00/4349128869/# (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86873853@N00/4349128869/#)
Even without the rubber washer it still doesn't have a lot of space to tighten.
Thoughts?

Welcome to the forum!
Could you take another picture without the nut and base on?
Side-note: I hated the Universals. I took them off after only a month and bought UltraStik360s.

I don't like hearing that people hate the joystick I just spent money on in preference to another joystick that I'd have to spend more money on ;)

That looks like plenty of room, even with the rubber washer.

You make a good point. I forgot that I put the whole thing together in pieces in the CP. I'll give it a try and get back to everyone if it works. Thanks!

This has nothing to do with the question, but just in case you need it, here's a video I made showing how to disassemble / reassemble the Universal. Mostly this is just for those wanting to replace the spring with a lighter one (I recommend it!):

Where would I buy a lighter spring? I just mounted one of them, which did fit. It's super tight though. I also had to bend one or two of the switch tabs, but I had to do that with the Super joystick too.
