480p preset for DA-4 chassis Sony HDTV consumer CRTs

Code: [Select]
crt_range0 33710-33790, 59.80-60.20, 1.100, 0.700, 3.200, 0.978, 0.148, 1.304, 1, 1, 448, 480, 864, 960
See the Consolemods CRT Wiki for a list of DA-4 chassis models - Consumer CRTs > Sony > HD WEGAs > Super Fine Pitch Models / Hi-Scan Models (Chassis DA-4)

Important notes on how the TV works with this preset:
  • The chassis runs at a fixed horizontal and vertical scan rate of 33.75khz / 60hz and the stock config is to digitally process all input signals to 1080i or 540p with varying amounts of lag. When the HDPT register in the service menu is set to 0, the chassis allows any ~33.7khz/60hz resolution over the YPbPr inputs to bypass the MID (scaler) and the TV operates as a zero-latency fixed-frequency monitor. (The HDMI or DVI-D inputs are not compatible.)

  • Although 33.7khz signals can go unprocessed, the chassis is designed with intentional hardware overscan, so some of the active image is cut off on all sides. This is rarely an issue when using 1080i sources as intended, since they almost always account for the TV's overscan by keeping vital elements within a certain safe-area. For the preset, it only uses 480 active lines out of the 540p signal, which is well within the area remaining after the top and bottom are cut off. Just by using vertical size controls in the service menu, the TV can be set for 480p - 448p to fit the screen exactly. The preset then fixes the cut off area on the left and right by adding specific horizontal blanking time, so no horizontal geometry adjustment is needed. This makes it minimally intrusive to return to the standard geometry settings for HD sources.

Service menu changes - geometry reference is SNES 240p suite monoscope:
  • Set the APSW register to 1 in the 2170D-1 category for 480p to fit the screen

  • Increase the value of the VSIZ register in the 2170D-1 category for 448p to fit the screen

Overscan comparison (note the corners):
  • Standard HDTV timings - NO service menu changes

  • Switchres calculated 480p mode - APSW set to 1 with NO changes to VSIZ

  • Switchres calculated 448p mode - APSW set to 1 with VSIZ raised

I'd rephrase things a different way : you may need a custom crt_range that, in turn, will compute the good modelines for you.

The Batocera script is a little too raw and makes my eyes bleed.

For the custom crt_range, it's a tough task. You need to understand the meaning of each field, and test on the same modeline over and over until you reach something stable and flexible enough to allow a wide variety of modelines.

I don't like optical or analogue joysticks because you can't "feel" the moves when playing fighters, I have a pair of u360s and they work great for what they are but this is where I feel like they fall short.
Make sure you have enough space on your trackball to shoot forward, the amount of blood and cracked fingernails on my spinal tap machine warrants a horror movie!

I think a pedestal would be great, gives the option to have some distance for the trackball and can be moved to clear up real estate if needed.

Are light guns "there" yet? I have the ultimarc ones but need the crosshairs enabled as I could never calibrate them 100%

Hi All,

I've obviously hit a problem and need some advice...

I just done a fresh install after my previous went wrong for some reason after moving house.

After the initial installation to HDD, I can't get the monitor resolution right, it wont let me change in setting either, just says nope!

It was fine when running the 'Live-cd' (can't add games). After installing to HDD the resolution changes.

I'm running 31k Naomi Cab.

Any help much appreciated,

Thanks

Air to air photo, at about the same time. first of my plane 🙂

The other plane (taking the photo ) is a 1946 Aeronca Champ. It was the first tail dragger I had a go at flying in.  Later it was seriously damaged in a crash during takeoff. The current owner bought it, while still an apprentice and rebuilt it 😊

;D Hey my friend, thanks for posting in this build. Of anything arcade related this has been the most the most satisfying project. Plenty pf problem solving and various challenges, but, to see those pinballs smoothly bouncing around with no lag in play, just really really nice.

For those of you new or just don't know, Pixelhugger is one of the great all time builders here at BYOAC. Following his epic build was just the best fun and inspiration. I was lucky enough to be welcomed into his home when I visited LA some years back. Kindred spirit and all that, and both of us dreamers. To sit down and have a meal with him and talk about crazy ideas... best thing ever!

Cheers mate.

Love the build. Jealous of the workshop with a view! And wood floors…  damn.

There is something deeply satisfying (or maybe it’s reassuring) to see the builders you respect still making awesome stuff here after all these years.

Thank you for the Help.

Picked up a better multimeter and confirmed all inputs and outputs to be within range.   Dialed up the power to get 5 volts vs the 4.10 I was getting.   I adjusted the ground contacts in the track ball to make a clean contact with the rollers and appears to be working.

I was hoping the accuracy would of been better when using the trackball but after reading some  reviews that are people that said it's normal.

Sorry... it is a trick question that I know the answer to.

The board is not lost... just tie the -5V motherboard input to ground and bye bye error.

By doing this the motherboard sees the -5V status during POST as 0V instead of some floating value.

ION and FORCE Megatouch motherboards do not use -5V and the OEM power supplies don't supply it either.

How do you tie the -5v motherboard input on the purple board?  I am having this error now.
