STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAMEWAH?
« on: July 24, 2003, 09:28:37 pm »
I have tried twice to get Mamewah working on my setup.  Either I am a complete idiot or the initial setup is hard and not very easy to do.

Can someone please help me.  I know I may be made fun of but I really want step by step instructions on how to do this.

What EXACT Files do I need?  (running XP)
Where do I extract them?  (exact folders etc...)
THen How do I setup mamewah?

THanks.

Download MAMEWAH v0.954b,

Open the zip-file downloaded and double click 'setup.exe' (you *may* have to extract all the files to a temp folder depending on your zip software),

Follow the instructions on-screen,

Navigate to the installation folder in Explorer and extract the contents of 'LAYOUTS.ZIP' to the installation folder (using folder names - this is important),

You should see a folder 'LAYOUTS' appear, if so open MAMEWAH by double clicking 'MAMEWAH.EXE' or using the Start Menu shortcuts.

Assuming all is well you should see a black screen with no games - get used to the default keys '1', '2' and cursors for navigation.

Reply when you get this far and I'll help you set it up...

i can chip in....

1) run mamewah, press 2, and just enter the locations of all your files. it is pretty straightforward from here.

2) for the layout, open the layout designer. file>open layout> choose your .lay file. then go to background>image>choose your background image (should be in the skins folder you made). now file>save layout. if you correctly point mamewah to the .lay (should do this in step 1), you oughta be fine.

Ok good thread just what I was going to ask.
I need more help though.

I have downloaded mamewahv0954b and I have been running mame32v67b. I understand I can use Mamewah with this ( I would prefer to do this even though I know mame32 has it's own gui. ).
Now imagine I am a complete dullard and explain it to me like I'm 6 years old.
I have the mamewah shortcut on my desktop but of course without extracting LAyouts.ZIP correctly when I open it there is not much there and it is unuseable.
What I want to know his how and where do I extract the LAYOUTS.ZIP files? Where the hell is this installation folder I'm supposed to extract the files to? Step by step please and don't say extract them using folder names, I have no idea what that means. Remember like a 6 year old lol.
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.

PS I also appear to have a new folder on my deskyop called files? EMU1-20? What's this? I don't think it should be on the desktop somehow. God I feel retarded.

Here is my attempt at some detailed instructions for newbies.

http://members.lycos.co.uk/stuzza12/help2.htm

Please note that it is not complete, may have some errors (I wrote it late at night :) ) and is not an "official guide".  Hopefully it will help some people out.

Thanks jake, just to add:

All you need enter for a basic MAME setup is:

Emulator Executable,
ROM Path,
Artwork #1 path (if you wanna see your snaps).

All the other settings are set for MAME by default.

Here's a tip: Go into 'Emulator Settings' > 'Execution Settings' and enter the 'Emulator Executable' first - MAMEWAH will attempt to find your ROM path, SNAP (Artwork #1) path and Catver.ini filename (& NMS filename).

jakejake28's Step 2 above is not neccessary for a basic setup - MAMEWAH will default to the 'Classic 640x480' layout.

You have installed MAMEWAH to your desktop - I would not recommend doing this.  Uninstall MAMEWAH, and then delete the 'FILES' folder and anything else MAMEWAH related that has appeared on your desktop.

Install MAMEWAH again, but just use the default install destination (ie C:\Program Files\MAMEWAH probably).

When this is done navigate to C:\Program Files\MAMEWAH (or wherever) using Windows Explorer and then you should see 'LAYOUTS.ZIP'.

If you are using WinZip, double click 'LAYOUTS.ZIP' and a dialog box will appear.  Hit 'Extract'.  Then tick the 'Use Folder Names' tickbox, and select the path to extract to (ie C:\Program Files\MAMEWAH).  Hit 'Extract'.

Now you can use the MAMEWAH Start Menu shortcut to launch MAMEWAH.

If you are not using WinZip then you will have to read your Zip programs instructions.  Or just download WinZip.

Hope that helps...

Ok.   I am MUCH further than I was before.  Thanks to that step by step website instructions.  I got MAMEWAH to load.   I FINALLY see the menus.  (problem before was my Layouts folder was extracted into another layouts folder)

I also got my games list showing.  Both good things.  I can run games from menu..  Here is where I still need help.

1.) Where do I get the artwork/screenshot info?

2.) Can I have MAMEWAH play mp3's in background? And if so can I have them stop once a game has been loaded?

3.) I have a Slikstik CO2 contol panel.  I am unable to get my Spinner/rollerball to work in games such as arknoid etc...  Went into controls and didn't see where I can adjust that.

4.) Went into 1942 game.  Was unable to fire or anything.  Not sure if I need a master config file to point to which controllers should be where and what buttons do what.

5.) When I use any joystick to scan down my game list it goes WAY fast.  And I am unable to just go down the list game by game.  So it is sometimes annoying to land right onto the game I want.  How do I adjust that?

THat is all for now.  :)

Thanks so much for getting me this far..

1) Sorry, not sure what you mean  ???

2) Yes, go into 'Audio Options' and set the 'Music Path'.  The 'Play Music while Browsing' option is set to 'Yes' by default.

3) This is a MAME INI setup thing.  See www.mameworld.net/easyemu and look for the 'mame -cc' bit.

4) Again, a MAME setup issue.  Check out the files in the '[mamepath]\ctrlr' folder, and ctrlr.txt in the '[mamepath]\docs' folder.

5) Does it move 1 game at a time but very fast?  If so, go into 'Control Options' and adjust the 'Joystick Sensitivity' (increase the value)...Or does it jump loads of games at a time?  If so, you are hitting the wrong keys.  MAME defaults for P1 Up/Down are default for going up/down 1 game - ie the cursor keys up/down.  Sounds like you may be hitting either left/right or P2 controls.  You can remap the controls in 'Control Options' > 'Customise Controls'.

Hope that helps a little...

Thankyou very much for your help, I have at least got MAMEWAH running now. I'm running it with MAME32 at the moment but I might change that later. Just one question how do get the computer to boot straight to MAMEWAH? I am running XP.
So I turn on the power on my computer and MAMEWAH is right there loaded and ready to go.

This was in a post from a while ago...I forget who exactly provided this info (I think it may have been Eightbit), but thanks all the same:

Getting a Front-end to run as a shell in XP and start with no user intervention
You cannot do this if your computer is part of a domain. It must only be part of a workgroup.

Create a user that will be the auto-login user. (User should have admin rights at this time)

Configure XP to automate the logon process if your computer is not part of a domain.

Click Start, click Run, and type control userpasswords2.

Clear the "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer" check box.

Click Apply.

Enter the user name and pwd you wish to automatically log on with, and then click OK.

Click OK again and you're all done.

Setup your FE the way you want it.

Open regedit and browse to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon"
Look for a string entry called 'Shell'. If it is not there, create a string entry and name it 'Shell'. Set the value of this entry to the name and location of your Front-end. For Lazarus, the shell entry may be "C:\Lazarus\Lazarus.exe" or wherever your Lazarus executable is located. For explorer, the entry is simply "explorer.exe".

Log out as the auto-login user and log back in as another user with administrative rights.

Change the auto-login user to a standard user. (This way people don't have more access than you want them to have.)

I've not tried this yet, but I believe it works great :)
