New monitor has large black vertical line, desktop sides swapped.

This is a brand new, WG9810.  The right side of my windows desktop is on the left, and vice-versa - with a large black line in the middle.  It's like this when driving from two different PCs, one XP, the other Windows 97.  It's pretty similar at all resolutions and refreshes.

Any suggestions?  WG tech support didn't seem to know what it would be - they had me try changing the jumper setting that controls interlaced vs standard, but on interlaced mode it's just a scrambled picture.

Looks like you're trying to run a 31KHz signal on a 15KHz monitor.  I'm not sure of the operating frequencies of the 9800, but that's what it looks like to me.

Are there sync controls on this monitor?

The only sync controls I can find is a jumper setting between interlaced and standard.  When on interlaced, it's just scrambled.  On standard, it at least is stable like this.  WG site didn't have a manual for this exact model, but the close ones like the 9800 seem to imply it's all automatic.  Nothing in the OSD seems to have any kind of sync control.

Is that a regular VGA signal?  For giggles try giving it a 15KHz signal.

Yeah, regular VGA.  I tried soft15khz on an XP machine, but it either didn't help, or wasn't compatible with the video card in that machine.  The main PC I intend to drive this with has Windows 7 on it, and soft15khz says it doesn't work on Vista, assuming that applies to Win7 also.

Not sure of another way I have to try and force a 15khz signal.

Are you sure you're at 640x480 not 800x600?  Windows has defaulted to 800x600 for a long time and makes 640x480 kinda hard to find.  Make sure you're at 60Hz refresh, too.

The jumper for standard/interlace may just change the sync separation/processing to handle progressive/interlace but not actually change the scanrate the monitor expects (i.e. "standard" would be 240 lines progressive while "interlace" would be 480 lines interlaced).  I don't know this monitor.

Also: does the black line move, or is it steady in the same position?

I've tried both 640x480 and 800x600 at various refreshes.  Yeah, had to go into the list all modes thing to find the < 800x600 resolutions.  Either way, this monitor is spec'd to handle 800x600 as well.  The picture is actually more solid at 640x480 at 80Hz than anything else.  At 60Hz, it's much jumpier. 

I guess whatever circuitry in it that's supposed to be doing the scanrate detection is hosed.

Do you have a service manual?  You can usually tell what mode the MCU thinks you're feeding it by checking the s-correction outputs.  A schematic will show you where they are, and, if you're lucky, it'll also give you a table of expected values.

This looks really weird, though.  It's not the normal "double image" thing where it's putting two lines of video on a single scanline.  I see two different halves of the background and no icons on one side, but I do see a mouse cursor on both sides.  I almost wonder if Windows is in some weird multi-display mode where it's chucking two desktops on a single video output or something weird.

Are you using separate or composite sync?

Don't have a service manual for it.  It's hooked up with the VGA cable that came with it, assuming that's separate sync.  I get the same results from two different PCs driving it - one Win 7, the other Win XP.  I think the reason the mouse shows up on both sides is that there is some overlap - part of the right hand part of the desktop shows up on the left, etc.

Like horizontal hold, horizontal shift, not sure what's available on the 9800.
