I give Tron an A-/B+, considering the year it was released and the types of movies being released around that time.

I'm not sure you can really compare the two.  Transformers is simply an eye candy movie that just tries to keep your attention with explosions, car chases and hot chics.  Tron isnt that type of movie.  Not really even sure why you decided to try and compare them......

Anyway, to each their own I suppose.

I was talking about the animated movie in the 80's. You know, the one in which they killed off all the stars and let the "c" team handle the workload.

What's wrong with TRON? I thought it was a solid movie. Not the "best movie evar", but still. Quite ahead of it's time.

I love Tron. Then and now, it's awesome. It's one of my favorite scifi movies and is one of a kind. The special effects still look great today.

Effects wise, TRON was a huge accomplishment at the time it came out.  No other movie had ever integrated computer effects with live action in that way, much less rendered 3D effects.  It was decades ahead of it's time.  They actually contracted 4 seperated companies to render the effects in time for release (I listened to the commentary track).

As far as the actualy movie goes, it's a matter of taste.  I find it absolutely charming.  It totally holds up today.  If you are a fan of classic games, I don't see how you can't like it.  There's a lot of imagination in there as to what those games would have actually looked like from the inside... if such a concept existed.

PS:  If we're judging a movie's quality by their success at the box office, then Titanic is the greatest film ever made, and probably will be for quite a long time.  There's a reason people remember TRON 25 years later, cause it's got that certain... something.

I'm guessing this could be an age thing as well.  I was 14 when I saw Tron for the first time.  Flynn is a geek who owns his own arcade, writes video games and gets babes.  He uses his knowledge of computers to save the day.  What a role model for a teenager.   ;D

It holds up for me today but I understand those who don't "get it."   My kids really didn't care for Tron until the characters showed up in Kingdom Hearts II.
