4-player shmups
dreamakuma:
Giga wing 2 has a four player mode.

Ok, this kinda answers my question. If there are 4-player shmups, there's only a handful, and they're certainly not in the classic space shooter realm or accessible. (last I checked, Giga Wing 2 wasn't a working rom?). And I don't know about you guys but I haven't seen a whole lot of x360 cabs.
Anyways, reason I was asking was that I've recently been tinkering with developing my own shmups and was wondering if there would be any interest from this community in a 4-player space shmup. (or other themes, my program is actually pretty easily changeable). I doubt I'd ever charge anything but I guess if things take off like the MAME folks I'd accept donations and such for custom shooters.
EDIT: Scratch that last line, sounds too self-serving, that's not me. Sorry there, folks. For one thing, I'm not that good; also, it's all for love of the hobby(s).

Hmmmm....... on a side note, if anyone here has experience working with MUGEN, maybe this could be a joint project for the community - it's not just for fighting games after all.
Even more random; if anyone here's a wiz at rom hacking I've always wanted to see a 3-player version of the original Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage and Final Fight. Alien Storm was made as a 3 and 2 player game by Sega so bummed they never did it with GA.

Wow, that looks really cool. I thought vertical shmups on a widescreen were crap, but with 4 players it makes perfect sense.

You guys are giving me some awesome game ideas. How about a dynamic shooter that widens the screen based on the number of players you have? (ie. black bars on the side to simulate a vertical screen if you only have two players or less but widens out to "landscape" if you have 3-4?).
As far as MUGEN, I did mess around with that earlier this year... got to the point of making my own character select and started doing some of my own characters but the sprite drawing just got too tedious and I abandoned that. I might pick it up again someday. I remember seeing there were some MUGEN _shooters_ out there if you can believe it, but I don't know how they did it.
Mostly now I've been learning to program using Darkbasic Pro, as it makes handling sprite chores a whole lot simpler for me, which is something I never learned in school. I've had C, C++ experience before but it's been quite awhile. Today I'm hoping to brush up on doing scrolling backgrounds.
