27" Arcade Monitor needed, the best out there please
« on: March 14, 2009, 09:05:49 pm »
Ok.

I have been researching this for about a month and have really gotten nowhere. Posts are old and what information is new isn't definitive. So here you go:

I bought a Gauntlet Dark Legacy cabinet that worked. It had the Neotech NT-2701 monitor in it that went dark a week after I bought it. No biggie, I bought the cabinet to gut out and turn into a MAME unit.

The cabinet is gutted and I need a monitor as I start to build the unit up again. I am hell bent on keeping the arcade feel, so no LCD, want a CRT and I guess the best out there are the WG D9800 or the Betson IMP 44-4070-RT, but both of these seem to have issues. I am in Cinci, so I don't believe there is a warehouse close by for either.

I have saved to build this and I have waited to do this for 30 years and I don't want to skimp, I want something nice and something that will last.

I need some help here, I would like to get this ordered Monday. I'm sure there's lots of opinion's, let me hear them!

Thanks to all, I appreciate your help.

Eric

Tri mode, crt, flat since tri mode is not offered in curved, correct?

Why have I not read alot about this monitor and it looks like this is only out of Canada?

Contact Rick at Nieman Displays. He can provide a list of USA distributors of his monitors. He is also a member of this forum "RICKN". He's a good guy.

Have you considered attempting repair of your NT-2701?  It's not a trisync, but you've already got it, and it's a pretty decent monitor.

I can vouch for the character of Rick Nieman.  Seems like an absolutely great guy.  Haven't used his products, but reviews are very good.

I plan to attempt to contact Rick tomorrow, I sent him an e-mail last night.

I thought about attempting to fix the NT-2701, however, I have never done any significant electronic repair and this one scares me.

The 2701 was not functioning properly when I got it, it was our of focus, off color, there were lines underneath the video screen that had the graphics and the image of the screen was in the shape of an hour glass. I was just preparing to play around with adjustments on the monitor and it flashed and went black, with the middle of the monitor maintaining a bright vertical line on the screen until I shut the system down. Just as I shut the system down I caught the smell of melting circuit board, so I was guessing the monitor has termanal issues. I never looked at the board though.

Thanks again. If anyone has other comments that will help my decisions, I would appreciate it, especially any past experience with the Neiman 27" monitors.

No one's mentioned Rick, nor has he posted, in a while is all. I'm pretty sure the monitor wiki mentiones him as a vendor.

Yeah, at the very least you have horizontal collapse. Could be more. Just depends on how involved you want to get.

OK, made some pretty good headway on the monitor today.

As most on here know, my choices are a 27" tri res flat pannel up to 31 hz or a 27" curved up to 15something hz. Since this cabinet will be used exclusively for MAME and I am trying to create as close to the original look as possible, I think the 27" curved 15something hz is where I want to be, correct? I am leaning toward Nieman as the monitor maker.

I wonder how something like Killer Instinct or Gauntlet Dark Legacy may look (once bugs are out of the ROMS) with this type of monitor? Also read a post about Paperboy not looking right on one side of the monitor with 15 hz, I forget if it was rotated or not.

Again, help is always appreciated.

15K standard display is mainly what you would need there is only a handfull of 25K games and most dont run all that great anyhow even on high end pc's and 31K vga is mostly for pc gaming sure there is some games that run 31K for arcade but usually they have a jumper to go to 15K anyhow so nothing is really lost over it.

15K is 95%+ of the native arcade diaplays overall

You really should read the monitor wiki to understand the hardware, and your options, in their entirety. Then look up different games resolutions (in the history.dat, Mame32/UI options for each game, MAWS, however), and you'll see what you kind of monitor you'll need.
