This is GREAT!  I wonder if I can get it working full screen in on my cab?  I tried quickly and you loose collision if the screen size changes.  looks like the size is passed in as a variable.  So modifying the page...

Can't you just remap the controls in MAME to act like the Atari port?

No, because unlike the Atari version, the arcade version doesn't have left and right; only a button to reverse direction.

Exactly. Which means it would switch every time you push a direction to thrust.
