Killer Instinct Cabinet
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:52:18 pm »
Hi to all,

I'm currently attempting to fit a new (second hand) monitor to an original killer instinct cab, I've got the monitor to go in to the cab and have purchased the right cables from Hatarex.  I'll post more details if required.

I was wondering where to get a wiring diagram for the cab and monitor as i'm not sure what wire goes to what from the video input... sorry if this all seems a little vague, its been one hell of a day!

Anyways if anyone can help it'll be great.

p.s the new monitor is a POLO.

Just checked my old posts the monitor is:

SAMBERS AI59EAK522X11 - POLO/2 25/28 15/25KHz

and the cab is:

Killer Instinct v4.0 5770-14397-03 '94

If that helps...

turned it on, heard a pop , smelled that smell (you know the smell). I checked everything tested voltages the whole nine...... plugged in my WWF Superstars board and watched it die too.  I pulled the jamma harness out double checked everything put it back in, flipped the switch and now the marquee and monitor dont get voltage.

I dont think I can afford a repair, so Im just gonna buy a can of gas and some matches. donations? LOL!

Did you check your wiring on your Video Blue or Green? The burn seems to center around Pin 13. When I set fire to a Ms Pac board, you could actually trace the popped RAM chips back to the test wire which was dangling in the cab. At some point while it was one, the wire hit an uninsulated end of a hot AC wire. I pulled everything off of the board and tossed it in the trash.

Is there any burn on your WWF board? post a pic of that burn. I rarely say this, but that KI2 looks it needs to get sent to the great arcade in the sky. Even if you could replace those idiotically small resistors, you'd have a hell of a time fixing any traces, unless like the other pins, that trace just moves vertically through those resistors. Maybe its worth a shot. I hate to see stuff like that get thrown out, and I'm sure you'd hate to see that too. I doubt a local op would even touch it.

Needless to say, don't plug anything else in!

burn similar spot. takin pic as I type this......

tada! here ya go:

BTW I pulled the jamma harness out ,there had to be a short in there. with the jamma harness out the monitor gets 120V but the neck doesn't light up, I figure that's because nothing is getting to the  RGB ground and sync wire leads, I'll find out when I get the breakout cable from thenasty and hopefully don't kill my extra computer. Ive been told that the KI2 cant be fixed, but none of the traces are dead, just the 1 surface mount, Im going to message the guy on ebay that sells flash kits. if that doesnt work I'll buy the KI1 -> KI2 conversion roms from hobbyroms

it sucks ass because I loved playing KI2 and I was actually about to sell my MKII cab and just have it now I dont wanna risk not having a jamma

Yup. The burn on WWF is on pin 13 too. You have something weird going on with your monitor. The neck should glow without a video source (Mine all do at least). If none of the traces on that KI2 board are bad, a REALLY careful repair would probably get that going. Honestly, what do you have to lose in trying to repair it? If it were mine I'd give it a shot. I can understand why other people wouldn't want to work on it. There's no guarantee that it would be repairable. My soldering skills are decent enough that with a good tip, some RUSH blaring in the background and a two liter of Dr. Pepper, I'd tackle that SOB without a second thought. Getting decent results would be a different story...

WWF looks repairable though unless there's some horrid damage on the back.

ok so I pulled the jamme wiring out of my MKII and plugged it into the KI2 machine and everythings fine, so the JAMMA harness needs to be replaced in the KI2, and Im gonna order one when funds allow.

Does ANYONE know ANYONE who has a KI2 board? I don't need any of the roms or the hard drive JUST a working PCB
I'll give them a broken KI2 and cash for it =)

Replacing the harness is the easiest thing to do. Id rather spend 20 bucks on a new harness rather than tracing all that wiring and such.

Cant help you on finding you a new board though. I'd take the old set for something to tinker with, but I wouldn't have a KI2 board set to trade/sell to you. eBay is prolly your friend here. If other people's auctions go like mine, you could snag a new board for 60 bucks.  ;D

untested but relatively cheap if working...  http://tinyurl.com/65ar52

Wowser! I've been ill for a good couple of weeks and looks like I've missed out on some interesting stuff!  Thanks for the wiring diagram that is dead handy I've got one for the monitor aswell  :) just to be on the safe side.

Also thanks for those pics and the worrying tale of a fried cab... here's hoping my friends works after I've tinkered with it... which should be tomorrow with any luck...

Any last bits of advice???

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Once again thanks for all your help I'd be seriously lost with out it!
