Where to find a big 4:3 LCD

<< < (11/15) > >>

Necro:
Dell is having a sale on the E248WFP  - 16:10 24".  You can get it for ~$300 with tax (it's their 10 day of deals thing).

Leaning towards ordering it...would be perfect and the bezel glass of the Omega Race I'm working with would actually work really well to conceal the sides of the monitor already.

Re: TD.  I've heard many a horror story on deal sites...so...I've never ordered from them.  Their recent reseller ratings actually seem decent, but I wouldn't order anything from them that involved a rebate they were offering themselves or something of that ilk.  If the price is right, I guess it's worth a risk if it's a known risk.

I also just did the calculations based on a monitor I know has a small bezel (acers) and the actual diagonals end up being over 24" on 22" monitors (the 24"s are a given I'd think).  So rotation is completely out on a WS monitor in a 24" cab...unless someone has already done it :)

One option to consider also (that I just used) - try to find a Buy It Now monitor for cheap on Ebay, then use the live.com 30% discount, and you can get some really good deals.  I just managed to snag a 20" LCD (8ms) for 130$ with a guarantee of no dead or stuck pixels.

Not necessarily. It depends on the native resolution of the monitor. Two 21" CRTs I have are native XGA, hence 5:4.

I wouldn't block off a monitor. As I'd likely use it for viewing other things, I'd leave it as is and size Mame accordingly with spaces. Could be worse.

Who talks about CRT in this LCD topic?
CRT monitors were all 4:3 (except one weird Sony)
But I still have to see the first 4:3 LCD at 19 inch.

No, there were a (very) few 5:4 CRT PC monitors.  There was a cheep 19" at an old work that my boss liked running at 800x600, but complained about the images being "stretched".  (IIRC that '19 inches' was viewable size, so 20"-21" tube size.)  I've seen stats of an arcade CRT whose physical dimensions seemed to be closer to 3:2 instead of 4:3 (1.5 vs 1.333), and 16:10 = 1.6) for IIRC a vertical shooter, but can't find the link.

There were 17" & 20" LCDs at 5:4, too, but now almost all 5:4 LCDs are 19".  AFAIK, all 19" LCDs were 5:4 (or, now more often, widescreen).

Sure, widescreen is great for movies, spreadsheets and horizontal PC games (driving, FPS), but 4:3 or 3:4 are sometimes better.  Coding, writing for printed paper, reading book-ish stuff, editing portrait photos, etc.  And since a widescreen has less screen area vs a 5:4 or 4:3, widescreen is cheaper to manufacture (for example 19": 5:4 area = 176 sq in, 4:3 = 173.25 sq in, 16:10 = 162.25 sq in).

With the hype, the move to LCDs, the cheaper to make, HDTV, and economies of scale, widescreen is going to be the only option soon.  :(

Hello everyone.

I wanted to "rekindle" this thread to see if anyone had any luck finding an LCD CLOSE to 4:3 since it seems that we have been invaded with widescreens.

My understanding is that the Samsung 2693 would be ideal since its 18 inches in height (sacrificing 6 inches).  I have a 25 inch cabinet with a crappy TV and blurred images.  I'm DYING to replace it.  I'm thinking that Ms.pacman will look horrible on this either way. (FYI, ms.pacman is for the wife)

Thanks.
