New cabinet build tekken 5 or MvC2
« on: August 10, 2008, 12:36:36 pm »
Im building a new cabinet. The local arcade has a tekken 5 and i really like the game and the cabinet its in. So im gonna build a cabinet based on it. I have a ps2 with tekken 5 and a dreamcast with marvel vs capcom 2. Im torn between which game to use because i just want to make it a dedicated cabinet. The cool thing about tekken 5 on ps2 is it offers 16:9 progressive scan. Also what im thinking about is lasting power. Which one is gonna last longer before having problems, the ps2 or the dreamcast, because i don't want to be replacing it in a year or two. Well i would like to hear you guys opinion on this one. Im going to take a lot of pics during the build process since i havnt seen a cab like this built yet. This should be interesting.

here is the cabinet

The ps2 is still in production and the dreamcast is not.

So the ps2 is longer lasting.

I dint necessarily mean which one is gonna be developed and produced the longest. That is obvious. What i am referring to is the durability of the console itself. Saying that if i have a ps2 that is in equal shape as the dreamcast which one is gonna bite the dust first.

Made my decision.I'm gonna use tekken 5. The reason why is it was made for this style of cab, it was tekken 1,2,3 and 5 on one disc, i don't want to sound shallow but i need a game in my collection that was some graphical horsepower and this will work nicely, i already have MvC 2 on nulldc and like it better because the music just plain sux on the original, and i just like tekken. Now i have looked on the internet and cant seem to find any artwork for the cabinet. I can just go to my local arcade and take photos of the artwork and clean it up for mamemarquees to print but if anybody out there happens to have the artwork i would appreciate it if i could use it. Also, does anybody know what type of joysticks and buttons the arcade uses. The buttons feel awesome and they are not as loud as my other pushbuttons in my cabinets. I'm gonna try to start this in the next few weeks. Any diminsions available for this cabinet? I'm gonna try to stay as true to the original cab as i can. One more thing I'm gonna use a standard 4:3 LCD because that is what the real arcade uses and also the 16:9 is not true 16:9 it just crops the top and bottom a bit so it fills the screen, and since the other tekken games are included i would just rather play them all on 4:3 rather that tekken five on 16:9 and the rest on 4:3.

I like the way those cabinets lay back, but they have kind of an IKEA look to them. I liked this cab, which has a similar profile but doesn't look quite as primitive. I'm pretty sure this was posted here, but I don't remember by who. I just liked the shape so I saved the pics for reference. This is also a bit easier to build for a DIY'r, since you can use wood instead of the metal beams on the one you posted. Sorry, but most of the images were small.

Thanks for the pics. That cab looks similar and easier, but i like a challenge. Like i said, close to the original, not exact. I already have an idea of how i will replicate the metal beams up the side. Ill be using a 19" LCD so if anybody has one for sell let me know. Ill be using all wood (instead of metal) mainly to keep it easy for future builders. It will more than likely be smaller than the original which is good because i want to make a small one on account of limited space. I will try to keep a good instructional style thread open so people who wish to build one in the future can refer to this project thread. And as always i will probably need some suggestions here and there. Also, still need artwork. In case nobody can come up with artwork I'm going to the arcade tomorrow to take high res photos an measurements. Well, wish me luck. Ill post progress as soon as i get some!

Here are some rough plans i drew. The original is 65" tall and 32" wide, CP height is 29", CP size is 36" x 11.5". The CP on mine is gonna be around 29" x 9.5". Anyway here are the plans so far.

I get absolutely giddy every time I see MVC2 boot up on my cab, however, there's an important thing to consider... There are about 120 million PS2s out there, so if one breaks while it's inside your cab, no-one is going to cry. However, the Dreamcast went out of production after only 2 years, so they're in considerably less abundant supply. Really though, you can do whatever you want with your own property, so it all comes down to which game you want to play more (and with Tekken 6 right around the corner, I think that MVC2 may have more longevity since it's a modern classic).

Well, i see what your sying with the ps2 being more abundent, thats one reason why i went with tekken. And like i said, i already have MvC2, MvC, MvSF, Xmen v SF, all in my mame cabinet so i really want the tekken games. I have tekken 1,2, and 3 in my mame cabinet but they are ps1 ports and since tekken 5 has all but 4 its a great choice. If this cabinet turns out well i might make a dedicated MvC2 cabinet with my dreamcast as the guts.

I think you might be disappointed with a 19" screen.

If you are planning on using a PC LCD I would get one of those 24" LCD, I really wanna tell ya to get a 32" LCD but your budget will likely not allow.

I have a17" screen in one of my cabs already and love it. Yes money is an issue. The price for lcd screens is a gradudual increase until you get over 20" then the price skyrockets. Space is also an issue for me. I have another cab that used a 19" crt and i like the size of it. Not to big not to small and a flat screen will make for a wife friendly cab. Im still searching for a screen. Anybody know of any good deals. Also i need one with an automatic on when it senses power. You may say, " they all have it" well they dont. I bought a 15" for a jukebox project and if you turned the power off then turned it on after a few minutes the monitor would power on but anything aver about 30 minutes and the screen had to be manually turned on. Pain in the #*$!! I  want to avoid that. Thanks for the suggestion on the larger screen. If i could find one under $200 i would use it.
