HOW TO MAKE AN ARCADE VGA BREAKOUT CABLE
Petesie:
13 and 14 pin on the vga are the 2 sync wires - do i twist together and attach to white wire on monitor.
the black wire on pin 5 to the black ground on vga??
Petesie:
i think i worked it out - here goes
pin 13 which is horizntal sync connect to black/white??
pin 14 which is vertical sync connect to black/white???
there is no ground on the monitor - yes/no
CheffoJeffo:
Sure. :dunno
It may well work -- but it is, IMPO, the wrong way to go about this, which is why I specifically asked for monitor information and told you to check the pinouts.
I understand the excitement to get things working (and had exactly the same questions that you have back when I first connected a PC to an arcade monitor), but doing things properly doesn't take much additional time and will avoid problems and prepare you for the next time. Or when it breaks. Or to help somebody else out.
:dunno
EDIT: Yes, there is always a video ground. HAVE YOU CHECKED THE PINOUTS ?
Petesie:
i dont know what you mean by checking the pin outs - im sorry for being stupid
the monitor is a hantarex polo 1 so i can just plug into wall - its in a mortal kombat 2 cab and is 25 inch - does that help??
CheffoJeffo:
There is nothing wrong with not knowing -- that's what this place is about.
There are a number of different monitors, each with their own pinouts (just like the VGA pinout -- Pin 1 may be Blue, etc.). If we can identify your monitor and then look at the harness that comes from the chassis (the circuit board attached to your monitor), then we can determine, with some certainty, where the wires should connect.
If I had to guess, and rely upon the wiring harness attached to your monitor, neither of which I like to do, I would say that black is your video ground and that white is your composite (combined) sync, so twist the sync wires from the VGA cable together and attach to the white wires from your monitor.
BUT, I would find the pinouts to make sure first. YMMV.
