MAME on an ASUS EEE

Anyone got one of these and tried running MAME?

Interested to hear your thoughts and to see if it worked.

Thanks  ;D

I've got the EEE 701 (1st gen EEE) - runs classics quite well (i.e. Star Wars, Galaga, Pac Man etc) but it's by no means speedy. You can play OutRun perhaps, if you don't mind a bit of frame skip.

If it's more recent stuff then it's likely to be disappointing. The newer EEE (901) may well be better as it has the Atom processor, but I'm not sure how much by.

As a base for a small arcade cab for classics, not bad, but don't expect 'proper'  PC performance.

It's pretty good for email and internet though - for example I'm posting this message from it at the moment :) Utterly ultra portable too!

Think of it as a P3 600 perhaps, I think thats about where I'd put it performance wise.

I'm basing this on mine running XP BTW - Linux got cleared off as I'm not overly familiar with it, though I don't think it makes much of a difference performance wise.

i had the first gen 701 of the asus eee. it played nintendo, super nintendo, gameboy advance, genesis perfectly from a SD card. no issues of any kind.

I also played some n64 games on it with no issues. as for mame it ran the classics fine. I didnt test the more hardcore games though. just the classic usual suspects. ive heard people having mame on a seperate computer and running it over a network fine logged in from the asus eee as well.

older versions of mame like 115 would certainly be better for it imho.

having owned one i ended up selling the 701 because the 7 inch screen was just to small for me. the 901 with the 8.9 inch and the new 1000 10 inch they are comming out with the atom processors look tasty though.

i should have tested mame more but with so many console emulators working fine i had way more games then i could handle already.

one thing i do remember is battery life on the 701 when running a emulator was dismal. 30 minutes tops from a full charge. maybe even more like 20.
