Well I called one Kinkos and was told they don't do backlit printing, then called another and was told she didn't know what button to hit on the register to get me a price..

Soooo

I opened up Superpages and found, right in my hometown a very friendly knowledgeable guy that prints on 7 mil backlit material.. and he's pretty cheap, 20 bucks for a one off marquee.

I'll let you know how it turns out, but I think I may have an alternative besides the chain stores for those folks in the Southern New England area. I'll let you know.

I never have been in the USA so far - but from what I've read here I know the people at Kinko's are not the brightest anyway! ;D
20 bucks is a fair price - go for it!

There's a guy in my hometown that will do backlit stuff, but there's like a $50 set up charge, plus $$$ for each one printed.  I don't exactly know what the 'set up' entails, other than putting material in the machine, but I guess he's got to make a profit.

...it just won't be from me.

uh... where's your hometown.. and what's the business name?

It pays to shop around... it's just hard to know the right terminology sometimes and where to look.

If you're interested in backlight (read: mylar) printing, MAMEngineer (Tom Beckendorf) offers a marquee service for $25, shipped to your door.

I wasn't completely happy with the results of my marquee from him, but I was completely happy with the bezel artwork I got from him. My review of his services:
