what monitor have i got?
« on: March 23, 2008, 08:57:40 pm »
hi just picked up a cab to convert to mame, theres no game with it, when i switch cab on (jamma) i get black screen on, well it changes to a kinna dark gray screen wit black hair line  strippes accross it, i looked at the arcade  monitor theres no label to say what it is, its a 19-20 inch i think, anyway should this monitor have a test patern switch or something os will it remain dark till a pcb is inserted or a jamma finger/jpac? or is there a way to identify what the monitor is, thanx

It'll stay black until something is connected to it.

hi i looked in the cab and a label had fallen off its a samsung 51ggb95x-tc no:k-0900200360,
when bought from the guy he said the colours/picture was faded and said might just need a tune from the back pots, since ive no board i cant boot it up, would a cap kit help this situation?

first -take a photo of the monitor board so advice can be given
second-get a game board and adjust the controls
then worry if it needs a cap kit etc

thanx for the picture link, the chas is Kortek KTN-20 110V CGA, on the neck board the 2 pots from left of board is bent over a bit like someones adjusted them, theres lots of things to adjust in this monitor, wonder if its fuxord or is repairable, and if the monitor is good for playing games on, thanx

korteks were ok,lots of colour adjustments etc
just get a game onto the cab and see how it goes
for mame you will need either an arcade vga card or soft 15k with a compatible vga card

you could get this and not have to do any wiring
http://www.ultimarc.com/jpac.html
most jamma games were mono
strip light can go to any mains input,be it the psu or a primary tapping on the tranformer

i was wondering what to use for connection, so i just get jpac, use existing buttons,
(3 per player) and connect everything to jpac, even speakers, cant wait to get it up and running, ill c if i can pick up a board tmoz from a arcade vendor, the cab needs a bit restoration work done to it, its got cracked kick panel so need to see if i can remove it without stripping it down, need to  sand down the laminate and paint it. so is this monitor good for playing all games or are they limitations? ive also a 21 inch flatscreen scart tv i can put in instead?

If you pick up a board make sure it is a jamma pinout.

i am not really into mame stuff being an arcade tech but without doubt the earlier jamma games should look good as they were meant for that type monitor,as for later games i could not say.
you are in europe as you have a scart t.v,this is very lucky for you as if your kortek is a pile of pants you can adapt a scart lead to run from the jamma connector for your flatscreen
to be honest part of this hobby is trial and error, you may need to upgrade bits and pieces from time to time
i would suggest getting the jpac and arcade vga, connect up your pc and see how things go
there are some very experienced people on this forum that can advise the limitations of running later 25/ 31khz games via the arcade vga to a 15khz monitor so i will leave that advice to them

as you said trial and error, the only thing is trying to get into the anode cap to discharge the sucker, so i can take it out to paint cab, is there and part i can touch of the monitor safely? to take it out, i knew you can make a scart cable from pc vga to scart but bnot from the jamma harness, that sounds better , need to look for diagram, what arcade cabinets came with a rotating mon, i saw a ebay item for one with vert/hor mon, but ge said he heres sounds but theres a white dot in middle screen and no pic, wonder if thats fixable i might get it

you should not need to discharge the tube to remove the monitor, the monitor should remove complete-only disconnecting voltage and video input, maybe earth and remote adjustment cable
the only time you need to discharge a tube is when you need to completely remove the monitor chassis(circuit board)
when you unplug the cab from the wall its pretty safe just don't stand in a bucket of water and stick your tongue in the anode cap
most cabs are able to tate the monitors, normally all you need to do is disconnect the above cables and reposition the entire monitor by unbolting at the front
as for the ebay cab-a white dot in the middle is either power supply in trip,no vertical or horizontal deflection which could be a missing voltage/dry solder joints or yoke failure
if you don't know what you are doing with monitors then don't touch, you can cause more damage

i'm not sure why you want another cab yet but i do where you can get good cabs and i know where you can get second hand/new monitors, all depends on what you want to spend
i would not get a cab that looks crap and has an old obsolete monitor

if you want a real proper cab then you want a candy cab like this(although i would call this particular one a beginner cab,but it gives you an idea)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230235344641
if this is the sort of thing you want i can put you in touch with the right people.
woody cabs are o.k for working mens clubs and crappy old pubs but if you intend to be serious then candy cabs are the way to go

golden tee will have a polo 1 if its gt99,if its gtfore  then it will have a polo2 dual frequency-you can pick those cabs up from cosmic video or edmonton machines
