is this the wrong hinge?

Looking at the picture it doesn't look like the door is lined up with the edge of the frame.  It's set off to the side the width of the wood. 

Is that how you mounted it?  I'm guessing that is how the hinge is build so you wouldn't have much a choice, but thought I would ask :).  If that how yours is setup, it could be the hinge is designed for 1/2" wood and you are using 3/4" or something to that effect.

Yeah... that's why I left it the way it was since it worked well enough anyway (I only need to get in that door occasionally, and otherwise I have full access from the back).

Maybe the hinge is right but the installation is incorrect. That's why I'd like to hear how you eventually resolve it -- so I can copy you! :)

i used a slightly different hinge and got it to work perfectly i'll provide pics asap

Make sure you get the type of European hinge that is designed for the door to be inset. Look here for some more info and you should be able to pick the type that will work for you.
