Icons slow down Mame32

My Mame cabinet seems to slow down when generating lists of games when I add icons.  Without the icons the lists build quickly.  I'm running Mame32.   Happens on both 63 and 65.  I've got a slower pc (900 MHZ) that does not slow down when adding icons.  Is there a Mame setting that could make a difference here?  I like the icons, but scrolling down a large list takes too long.  The pages build too slowly.

I don't use mame32 anymore, but you used to unzip the icons from the huge zip file (and delete/move/rename the zip file) to increase the speed.

Thanks, I was going to try that next.  It's odd, because I never noticed this when I first constructed this cabinet a year ago.  Somewhere along the lines the performance suffered, and I just don't know what changed to cause it.
