Paman cocktail underlay from localarcade no quite right
« on: April 03, 2007, 09:04:47 am »
Has anyone else every printed out the pacman cocktail underlay from localarcade? I am sure the Ms. Pacman is the same, but only printed a draft of the pacman for sizing. Anyways, the overall size is just right, but some of the curves don't match up with the cocktail top.
If anyone has addressed this in a revised vector file, please let me know.
Thanks!

Believe it or not, that's the way the originals were done as well, at least they match exactly when I've removed an old, soda-stained one and replaced it with a new one.  No matter how you line it up, it's going to be off by about 1/8" in certain spots.  Usually it's not noticeable by the casual observer (YOU didn't notice when looking at an original, did you?) and should look fine once the glass and clamps are in place.

The original on my pacman is painted on. There are fairly substantial differences between the painted underlay and the printed underlay. The main thing that bugged me about the localarcade underlay was that the underlay does not completely cover the curved edges of the wood top.

Yeah, I think that they stopped painting them when the Ms. Pac & Galaga came out due to cost issues.  Obviously it would be insanely expensive to get a new glass with painted on artwork.

I'm pretty sure they just used the Ms. Pac overlay as a template for the Pac-Man overlay.  Like a lot of things, the overlays were made to spec on what the cabs were supposed to be, and the cabs were constructed separately, so they didn't quite match exactly.

I did have one place send me an overlay that wasn't cut out and was black all the way out.  Since I had to trim it myself I was able to put the glass on and trim it exactly to the cab.  The only thing I didn't like was that it was printed and laminated.  Made it very shiny and not the "satin" look of the normal overlays.
