Having numerous problems with MAME programs

Doom bucket:
First off...

I've been trying to use Mala as a front end for the command line mame. But really, it's just frustrating to use. I can't get any layouts working properly, and because it's command line I can't seem to get addons like kaillera working properly. I was tuned into a program called winkawaks, which seemed to do everything I wanted to do very well.

But every time I try to go fullscreen with it, it crashes. Still, it's the only program that I've used so far that actually plays the Neo Geo roms correctly. Also, I haven't managed to configure my controls properly because the program has a wierd glitch... every time I try to redfine the keys, the entire setup changes. Like I'll change one of the buttons, and another button changes in response. It's very frustrating.

I also can't seem to get my 360 controller working with any of the MAME programs. I was hoping to use it as a third player for when friends come over, but I can't even configure it. Any ideas?

SGT:
Mala is typically easy to use though there are a few quirks with the layout editor, IMHO.  There seems to have been a lot of wip and bug fixes with Mala the last 4 months, but for whatever reason there hasn't been a release since October which is frustrating.

gonzo90017:
What type of controllers are you using? USB? Make sure you don't have any turbo, or slow motion buttons pressed. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Game Controllers and make sure no buttons are active. What resolution are you  using? Maybe you're using a resolution your monitor doesn't support. Try setting winkawaks to 640x480

Doom bucket:
360 controllers are USB, yes. They don't have turbo or slow motion buttons, and none of them are "active".

This is starting to get very annoying

mamewah, AtomicFE, Mala, all of them seem to have their unique problems and quirks but none of them seem to be doing what I want them to do, which is play videogames
