Yes a trackball will work for spinner games.
If you don't know whether to get a spinner then you probably don't need one. However if you ever play Tempest or Blasteroids with a spinner then you'll wish you got one ;)
FrizzleFried:
To determine if you need a spinner...
Do you play:
Racing games
Arkanoid type games
Tempest or Major Havoc
Then you need a spinner.
If not...then likely you can do without.
If you determine you need one...take a look at the Turbo Twist 2 over at www.groovygamegear.com.

Bite the bullet and pick up a ps2/usb track ball with the mouse buttons, its worth having and its simple to install, acts like a mouse in windows and people will love playing golden tee and my fav Crystal Castle, you wouldn't believe how many people i got hooked on that game. One more thing i dont understand the concept of the ugly looking mouting square assembly for trackballs, try and stay away from it. It depends how orignal you want your cab to look, i have my mouse buttons (black) which are hidden on each side of the panel, plus they act like pinball buttons for certain games. Say no franken panels

Ugly looking? Should be completely hidden after routing a recess and covering with CP art. So out of curiosity how do you recommend mounting a Happs trackball without a mounting plate?
MAME TIME:
On my panel i just cut to fit in place, next made up some brackets to hold from the bottom, took apart the assembly and screwed it once i had the proper hight i wanted. I guess what i meant to say is if your going to go out and get the "mounting square" try and keep it under the art
