Bust-a-move again MAME 108

THis guy has a valid point...

alot of us are new to mame and don't have the slightest idea what you guys are talking about.

I always thought that a rom file was a rom file, a dump of the original game, so therefore it shouldnt change, it should be the same no matter what version of mame you are using.

So my question to you is, how do we go about fixing these problems?  (yeah i know download the right rom, or update the old one...)  the problem is, documentation on this is difficult to find, and nearly impossible to follow.

for instance...i can't get missile command to work.  i have the only two missile command roms that i can find (missile.zip, missile2.zip) however i cant play it because it is missing files.(i have countless other games with the same issues).  I have no idea how to tell which version of mame these roms are designed to work with, how do I tell that?  I am using mame .105, how do i find roms that work with this version?  As for updating them, how is this done?  I downloaded clrmame pro, but i cant figure out what the hell to do with that....the only documentation i found for it is for a very old version that looks absolutly nothing like the current version.

see my problem?  I know I'm not the only one in this boat.  Well, our boat is sinking, and instead of throwing us life preservers, you guys are just standing there telling us not to drown.

I have googled for a while and came up empty handed..is there a site with a step by step guide for how to accomplish this?...one that is relativly current and easy to follow?

we are not asking you to just fix all of our problems, we just need some help...show us how to fix our own problems, instead of just telling us we have problems.

IF I only had a 28k dial up connection and I wanted Mame Roms those auctions people see and freakout about on ebay all the time would be very appealing.  Since I am lucky enough to have a broadband connection I generally watch the newsgroups for mame rom floods as new versions are released if there are games I want.  A simple google search however for  mame roms  turned up many hits.  As far as trying to keep your roms all updated with all the latest versions of Mame, it could consume your life and really is it necessary?  I managed to get a good rom set for version .9x and ran it for A LONG time, the only reason I updated was because they fixed some timing issues with Robotron.

I wrote a tutorial about MAME (and other systems) roms for marcianitos.net. And also I

Hey,

Depending on how new you are to mame, you may not know that some games require bios roms to run.

(For a long time, I couldn't get a lot of games to run. But once I got all the bios roms most of them worked.)

And of course, you have to have the main version of the rom in order to play any other version. You can often tell which version is the main one by its size; often the largest rom indicates that it is main rom. (This may be incorrect, but I thought I heard it somewhere before, and it has worked for me so far. )

Perhaps you already knew this, but I thought I would state it anyway.

Goodluck!

Unfortunately, with each new release of Mame, there are "tweaks" to the ROMs. A new board is discovered that is truly the original, or a chip was discovered to be bad on a previous dump is re-dumped, what was thought to be an original ROM dump turned out to be a bootleg, etc...

What you need to do is run a ROM manager to make sure you have the correct version of the ROM dump for the version of MAME you are running. Check out this:

http://www.clrmame.com/

This program will go through your ROMS and verify what version they are, and attempt to fix them for the version of MAME you specify.
