DOS MAME .61 won't allow 1 key to have 2 functions?

Hello from Maine,

I got a beaten, converted, and gutted Gauntlet that I am bringing back to life with MAME!

Hooray!

I wired up the keywiz today and there were not enough inputs to have all the keys (35 out of 32) So, like the CP sticker shows, I intended to use "player's 2nd button" as "player's start" (lowering the count by 4 buttons now it's 31 of 32 inputs)

So "P1 button 2" is ALT, I tried to configure MAME to use ALT as "P1 button 2" and as "1 player start" - it allowed me to input that but it won't work. Apparently MAME won't allow 1 key to have 2 functions... Is there anyway I can get around that?

This is the very last obsticle I need to ovcercome before the Gauntlet is revived.

Thank you,
Craig

I remember before that you can do it but I don't know in this newer versions of MAME. Anyway, how about doing it the  HARDWARE level ? Just connect p1start and p1button2 as (ALT) so two buttons is ONE.

*edit*

Myabe this is not what you wanted....I may have interpreted it wrongly.
Maybe you ned to hook up in P1Button2  as  "ALT" and P1start(1). I don'tnow if Keywiz will have problem shorting those (ALT,1) two inputs.

I tried it on MAME32 .36 and it too won't allow ALT to be both

What a drag!

I can't do what you are suggesting because there is no 1,2,3,4 on my KeyWiz. I programmed it and I didn't have enough inputs (out of 32 available) for that so I assumed I could use 1 key for 2 functions in MAME.

Egads! Help!

Thenasty:
you mean it does register in TAB but when you use it it won't work ?

Thenasty:
I just tried it with 105 and it works....YOu have to do it in the INPUT THIS GAME MENU not the GENERAL.
