Display hardware decision: WG monitor, JAMMA, UVC?
« on: April 03, 2006, 10:38:29 am »
Hello all,

I'm very excited to have my very first cabinet, which includes a nice 25K7193 monitor, and everything wired for JAMMA.  But I'm not so sure what I should do about the display.

The WG monitor is (correct me if I'm wrong) 15kHz, so I need to get a scan converter of some sort to run it.

The computer I have doesn't have an AGP slot (Dell Dimension 3000), so the arcadevga is out, unless I replace the machine.

Seems my options are:

- Happ's Universal video converter
- Averkey 300 gold scan converter (or an Extron)
- replace the monitor with a high-res CRT
- replace the PC with one with an AGP port, for use with ArcadeVGA
- Use advancemame, though I doubt I can get the dell drivers to work correctly with this software hack. This might require a new video card.

In any case, I'd want to interface this to the jamma harness:

PC -> converter -> JPAC -> JAMMA

So far, the most likely route seems to be happ's UVC, but does this thing have decent video quality?  I've heard very differing opinions, and a 25% restocking fee on a $255 product is a bit much to risk without more testimonial.

Another important question: is there any prayer for me being able to play vertical games on this horizontal monitor, in any of the above scenarios (esp. UVC or ArcadeVGA), or is the resolution just too crappy? I'd hate to have to pull this monitor out, since it's perfect, but I do want to play vertical games too.

Any advice would be appreciated. I don't mind spending a little more to get a good solution that doesn't require a lot of my time "experimenting".

Many thanks.

from experience an avga+billabs BL27CB0P or Wells Gardner d9200 offer the best image quality. Advatage goes to billabs as they have an adapter that lets you just plug in video from the jamma and run and it runs at 1024x768.
Motorfish and i where shocked the first time we every used an avga on a d9200 and how much better it looked than scanlines enabled option with other video cards.
