MAME v.104 with v.103 romset

What exactly is the downside of using a romset that doesn't match the current version of MAME?  Is it just that certain games won't work, or is there more to it?

Nope, that is pretty much it.  You can "ugrade" the affected roms usually with clrmame and tools of that sort.

Havok:
You shouldn't even need to use clrmamepro when they are that close. I am actually doing that right now: I have a 103 romset, and am using 104u6. Works fine...

(Before I get flamed - you might get some issues with some games, so if you notice any problems, then that is why. In that case, use a rom manager to fix the problem)

Yes, you should.  If the rom for a game changed you need to use clrmame or romcenter to tell you that.
