If you know anything about Speakers please HELP!!!!
« on: March 07, 2006, 03:40:48 pm »
I have a 25 x 25 section of my basement where my pool table is. My question is can I without damage to any components hook up 4 ceiling speakers to my pc and tv at the same time. That way when i watch the tv the speakers will play the tv sound, and when im using my pc it will play the music from it. Maybe another question would be would it make sense to hook up those ceiling speaker (4 total) to a pc for music purposes? I just want to be able to blast music in this section so that everyone hears it..... and use those same speakers for the tv when they are watching tv in this section, surround sound is not an issue for me as i have another section where my main media theater is. I was looking at these for ceiling speakers JBL SP6C, SP8C, HTi6C. Don't know which is better for my situation. I'm mostly concerned about circulating the sound around the area and clear music playing. Any help would be appreciated as far as what to pick and how to lay them out. thanks

Here are those speaker specs side by side, if you can see which is the best let me know i dont know Shizz about specs

Am I missing something or couldn't you just connect both the pc and tv to the amp and use the amp to switch back and forth between them.  I'm assuming you have an amp since you'd need something to power those speakers.  You can easily connect any computer with a sound card to an amp using a cable like this : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006YZ3Y/104-7932522-0099137?v=glance&n=172282

I agree with AtomSmasher.  Does your pc sound card have an output that your receiver will accept?  Then just use your receiver to select between tv and pc mode.

The speakers you've shown get wired up using standard speaker wire, I haven't come across any TV's or soundcards that actually have connections for speaker wire.  Normally it's just RCA cables from TV's and headphone jack to RCA for sound cards.  These are then plugged into a receiver/amp to power the speakers.  You could probably hack into the tv casing to get to the internal speaker wiring however this doesn't get past the soundcard issue.
As these speakers aren't active speakers (self powerd like the speaker packages you get for pc's) you will need some source of power to drive them, I can't see any way around not having an amplifier.
Could you not put the amp with the wall mount tv? or with the pc?

Sound cards put out line level audio - nonamplified.  That is why PC speakers are powered and why he's going to need a receiver.

i used to wire up similar things and i always used an amp because if you get a problem then its the amp and not your tele or pc that gets it,now if it was me i would get maybe max 100w per channel amp,2 inputs or more ,2 outputs or more with remote, then you could conceal the amp and not have to manually switch between signals.your wiring of the speakers will depend on how many speakers you want on each channel and the resistance rating of the speakers i.e if you have 2x8ohms speakers on one channel that will be fine because you will have 4ohms at the amp but if you want to wire 4x8ohms speakers on one channel then you will need to wire in series and parallel otherwise you will end up with 1ohm at the amp and thats fatal,i think you said you want to put 4xceiling speakers,if they are 8ohm then 2 on each channel in parallel is perfect.remember always slightly over rate the speakers to the amp.i hope this makes sense,im sorry i tend to waffle a bit. :)

Im a total newb when it comes to sound and audio. By amp do you mean a car ampliphier or what should i lookup on ebay to get an idea? What I want to do is use the same 4 speakers for both audio from pc and audio from tv, seperately of course. I want it to auto detect this so i dont have to access the amp whenever I want to use one over the other....

In this case, an amplifier would be a home reciever.  Definately the easiest way I think, but there is more than one way to skin a cat.

no not a car amp,a home amp/reciever perhaps you call them by a different name in the states.in the uk you could pick up something like this from your local audio store(something like walmart perhaps) for about 60 quid(about $100 or less).maybe worth a look on ebay(a car amp would work but i doubt you would find one with a remote)

He's not going to want a $100 amp if he's looking at that range of speakers.

Go to harmankardon.com or onkyo.com and look at their refurbs on the online stores... great deals in the $200-300 range.

Ok here is my deal guys . I want to share 4 speakers between my PC JUKEBOX and my flat screen tv. Now i dont want to change the input everytime i switch between the two devices. Which recievers would make me do (unless someone knows an auto detect reciever???) What are my options in terms of Getting sound from these devices out of the same speakers....

If that's what you want then go for it.  But it's not what you originally asked for.  You'll still need an amp to power the ceiling speakers.
