Many moons ago, it seems, I wrote asking how my wife and I could best hook up our PC to our new HDTV. We were originally planning to make it a multi-purpose station where one could even word process if one wished, but we never could get text to appear well on it.
I had been using a (cheap) scan converter to send the picture to the TV via RGB. This past Sunday I went to Microcenter to look for a higher grade video card. I figured I could find one for close to $100 that had a DVI output on it, if I looked hard enough. Sure enough, they had a Diamond manufactured Raedon 9250 on sale for $79.99 with DVI out, S-video out, and typical VGA out. I bought the thing home and after several hours of looking for PCI slot got it hooked up. Once I got the DVI cable....well...all I can say is WOW! I know some told me it doesn't make the games play HD, but friends the detail off that card is very sharp. You can see every detail clearly on the barrels DK throws...and poor little Mario is no longer pixelated!
Oh - and the text is nearly perfect - you can read all the desktop icons now with virtually no eye strain!
Where there's a will, there's a way. I may go back and try powerstrip again to try and force a slightly higher res, but the 800 x 600 that's running now works just fine.
