Deal of the Century!
« on: January 03, 2006, 10:34:54 pm »
A freind at work pointed out that he saw some arcade games on Craigslist. Knowing that I am Mr. Arcade he waved me over. There on the page were a Galaga and a Sonic Joker pinball. Both for $100 because they were "broken". The pics showed no major damage. I emailed the lady, got a reply that some people wanted to come look at them that morning. I commited to buy right then sight unseen and she promised to keep them. My worry was that someone would show up and offer allot more than $200 for them. Nobody did, the ad was taken down an hour after I called and now they are mine. The galaga needed a new PS and the Sonic needed a playfield glass and cord. Nothing like this has ever happened to me.

Funny thing is it was the same as the other Galaga and the Asteroids Deluxe I got was from the same sort of set up, a single woman with daughters and the husband bought  the games which hadn't been played in 10 plus years and were clean and stored in A/C and carpeted basements.

IPDB has no record of a Sonic Joker pin... have you actually picked the games up yet?

Power supplies themselves rarely fail, so don't anticipate just getting a plug and play power supply and dropping it in for the Galaga.  It's very likely something else entirely.

Yeah tell me about it?

I changed the power supply in my Galaga.

Because it was getting only 4 volts from the original one.

And i still have the same problem with the board.

So yes i agree it can be anything with a Galaga !

Hopefully not though.

check you for cold solder joints on the power pcb all along the power inputs and output pins.  I just reflowed them all just to be safe.  Also check the moxel connectors.

It can be anything with any game, really, not just Galaga.  Transformers themselves rarely die, though, at least with any frequency compared to the other parts in a game.

Where is the power regulated in a Galaga?  I'm not familiar with the exact architecture of this one.

That's true, but what it may very well be is a Joker's Wild by Sonic (obscure Spainish pin maker).  http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=3182

Neat find, but realistically, not the deal of the century.

Of the four Galaga's I have had in my possession, four have needed a switching power supply installed.  The power supply board in the Galaga's is prone to failure.  Eventually, you can't adjust the +5vdc high enough to run the game with the old supply.

That would be dead board components, though, not the transformer, yes?

It is a Sonic Super Straight, I kept calling it a Joker because of the card next to the Sonic logo.

The Galaga had a bad PS board, transformer was fine. I pulled them both and went with a switcher. Now I have two working Galagas.

Pics up in about 10 min.

I have one original Arcade cab, and I got it for a good price because it was dead too. In the end, I only had to replace a thyristor in the PSU, so yes, PSU's do go bad as well. In this case, a dead fan was the cause of blowing up the PSU to be honest, but still....

I'd wish such deals like this to find a real classic would come by here in Europe... :S

Unbelievable, nothing like this has happened to me. But here they are. The Super Straight would power up but no action. I repaired the start button and dangeling flipper solenoid and once you inserted a credit then hit start the game would still not feed a ball. I fixed the ball sensor switch and now when you hit start it feeds a ball and plays great. However, when the ball returns  to the outhole the next ball does not get fed to the plunger. If you press start the ball still does not feed. I tried it with one, two and three balls in the machine.

Here is the Super Straight:

Here is the Galaga, It was so nice I slid it into the place of my other Galaga, put on the new side art, and that is that:

Fixed the pin, some tard had put a ball sensor switch in with the wire frame actuator half way between the leafs. It could not have slipped. Game works 100% now!
