ok, getting the rom which is great (",). but its not supported in mame78. whats the easiest way of determining when a rom becomes supported?

Initially? MAWS keeps track of it. That doesn't mean it's fully supported though, nor even playable. That just means a driver was written for it.

that sounds like something i would do. kinda like when i go to bestbuy and say hi to everyone who works there and then when im leaving i say have a nice day. but this duel wielding sounds much better. hmmm...id consider doing this at my local walmart-they have a cruisin usa and a police trainer cab (real shame what happened to the last lightgun game they had there-was a shotgun game looked modern with 3d graphics and was like a podium-anyway it was rendered unworkable in a week).
not to steal the thread but there was another modern gun game where you had a metal shield and were a police officer i believe any ideas?

Why haven't I ever thought of that?! I'll be at a family fun center on newyears eve night with all the arcade games on free-play, maybe I can try it then.
While on the subject, there is a lightgun game I can never remember the name of too. It's a police game with two removable guns. The guns are big futuristic rifles that you place against your shoulder and have pretty good kick back. The guns are placed in the side of the pedestal with a green light trimming the holder. The game was nothing special, but the system itself was pretty darn cool. Any ideas?
Edit: Nevermind. It hit me after I had typed it. Ghost Squad.

ok, so sounds like the best bet is to just get the latest version of mame. id only use it for that one game. would be a damn cool project for a stand alone, provided as you say the game works properly. building the machine guns would be a blast (",)
