Trying to fill the screen using MacMame
« on: December 04, 2005, 04:01:03 am »
I just dug out a Power Mac 7500 that I bought for ~$20 back in 2001 and upgraded to a G3 333MHz, 136MB ram, CD-burner, IDE RAID setup and dual monitors.

It hasn't even been powered on since 2001ish and I've been wondering what to do with it since it's basically worthless at this point.... and then I thought about Mame!  I Googled, downloaded MacMame v.66, loaded up a couple of my .55 roms and voila! It works!

Obviously the MacMame program/FrontEnd is limited, but there must be a way for me to get the games to fill the screen.  I have the "double" or "triple" screen size thingy checked under MacMame's video tab, but none of the games hit the edges of my screen.

Is my only recourse to configure the monitor hardware itself (OSD controls) and stretch the screen?  Is that what I need to do?

This is kind of cool, BTW.  All of a sudden I have a completely "new" MAME setup to mess around with, and I've found value in a computer that I basically thought was worthless.

bump   Anybody here use MacMame?

I tried stretching the image with my monitor's controls but it won't move far enough to reach the edges.    There must be some way for me to get these to fill the screen.... I found some post that referred to an OpenGL setting, but I'm using MacMame .66 (last one for OS 9) and I'm pretty sure they were referring to some more recent versions.

I used macmame a lot before I bought a PC. ( To play games on ).. My friend introduced me to Mame years ago ( thanks Rat!!!) and loved rubbing it in that he was playing Space Invaders on his PC... a bit of googling and viola MacMame. I played my games in full screen. From memory you launch Macmame go into video options from the frontend and select a video card to get HWstretch. This strectched all games to full screen.. now your Mac being a bit long in the tooth may not be able to do this. I was running it on a first generation imac 233mhz OS8, 9 and OSX It was the one with a pci slot so I also had a aftermarket 3dfx pci video card which boosted the vram. Most games ran well but games like Mortal Kombat would not..
I am pretty sure that advance mame works with a mac too?? Although I have never tried this.
Good luck

Also for a cheap arcade stick hack a cheap Gravis gamepad if you have USB (Macmae recognises it) and wire the buttons from a stick to the touchpads inside the game pad .. was my first Mame machine..

Hope this helps

Full screen stretch is only available with the OpenGL plugin, which only works under newer MacMAME builds under OSX.  Otherwise in older builds (and on pre-OSX builds) you are limited to pixel doube/tripling, as you have found out.

If you have an older Mac running OSX without OpenGL accelleration, you can try XMAME with SDL output for full screen MAME.  But again, this won't work on OS9 or earlier.

Also, there is no front end support for Macmame other than the built in... which isn't bad... In my opinion it doens't make for an ideal cab.

Not to mention that MAME prefers raw MHz to any other performance indicator, and Macs have the highest dollars-to-MHz ratio of all desktop computers, which makes it a very expensive option (unless the hardware is lying around, or donate-ware).

If I was putting a Mac in a cabinet, I would consider using Linux-PPC with X-Windows, SDL and XMAME instead of MacOS.

Yeah, I'm just trying to put this old PowerMac to some use and was excited to see that it seems to play the classics pretty well... just too small :(

I had read around there the other day before I posted here but couldn't find a specific answer.  I was trying to avoid joining another forum.... I have too many hobbies and every new forum I join seems to be one more nail in my 'distration coffin' :)

I think I have a problem :)
