New project: Satan's Hollow CPO
« on: October 30, 2005, 02:38:04 pm »
This one should make at least a few people happy, since as best as I can tell, this hasn't been available as a repro at any point in recent memory, and good condition CPs are tough to come by.

My CPO is pretty ratty around the edges, but I managed to get the 23 years worth of grime off with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and get a good 600dpi scan together with my trusty Canon flatbed.  Was going to take it to Kinkos for scanning, but they neglected to tell me when I called up and asked if they had a large format scanner that the only one they had was sheet fed.  :-\  Glad they couldn't do it, though as I'm sure it would've been way overpriced, and the results I ended up with at home are great.  Pulled the side bezel pieces off the scanner so the CP could sit flat against the glass, did each side in three passes and spliced them together in Photoshop (layers + difference mode FTW!).

Vectorization will likely start this evening.

Nice, that's a pretty rare one.

Just so you know... I have the satans hollow curved blacklight bezel in amazing condition. I might be able to scan it if you need it.

I bought a terra cresta cab that was originally a satan's hollow machine. http://homepage.mac.com/mahuti/altcab/PhotoAlbum35.html

I had no intention of ever returning it to Satan's hollow status, but the bezel odly enough works with the terra cresta art. If the terra cresta art wasn't in such nice shape, and kinda cool in its own right, I might consider stripping the thing to see if the satan's hollow art is still in good shape underneath.

If you can get some high res pics of the side art, I might be interested in helping you vector that... it's pretty cool stuff, and might help me out if I ever decide to convert it back to a satan's hollow.

There is bezel art, which will be the next piece I do after I finish the CPO.  I'll probably find someplace that can scan that one for me, as a good scan is much better to work with than a photograph, and I don't think I'm willing to dismantle my poor little flatbed scanner any further to try fitting a bezel onto it.  Mine seems to have faded more than the other art, and the yellow is less gold than the rest of the cabinet's art.  It's really one of the less inspiring bezels out there - there's not a lot to it.

I plan to try to take some vector-able pics of the sideart at some point in the restoration process...  Hopefully won't be needing it myself any time soon, as I'm personally planning on masking off the art and just repainting the red field, but as long as I'm working on the other bits anyway I might as well go ahead and do the sideart too.  Going to need to find a way to photograph the sideart in a grid fashion and splice it together.  A lot of the areas (the breastplate, for example) have a lot of intricate little squiggly lines that will require pretty high resolution to duplicate accurately.

Marquee has a lot of halftone in it.  I could scan it in if anyone else wants to do it, but I'm not sure I want to do that piece myself (especially since I don't need it personally).

Mahuti - I've got two of the curved bezels in good shape, so I'm good there...  Wasn't going to vector it as I don't have the means by which to scan the art or photograph it in a useful way.  If you have the means by which to scan it in, feel free to do so...  Couldn't hurt to have it in the art library, although I'd imagine it would be pretty rough for anyone to bend the plexi to reproduce that piece.

Regarding the CPO, I did some measuring and got the scans positioned in Illustrator, and have started with the lettering above the shield buttons.  I can already see this being a fairly time consuming project - there aren't any smooth lines anywhere on this thing.  :P
