whats the best specs for mortal kombat

RayB:
 F11

Also make sure frameskip is on AUTO.

When you press F11, info will show up in the top right.
There will be a set of numbers. Like 60/60 (or for MK I think it might be 53/53)

The first number is your frame rate. The second number is the game's original preferred frame rate. If you see something like 40/53 then you know you're not getting the full performance out of the game (you're only getting 40 frames per second instead of 53).

MaximRecoil:
When I first came across Mame, the current version was .56 and I had a 733 mHz Celeron, 64 MB RAM, and onboard video, and it played MK just fine in Mame32 (v.56) with default options. It did OK on MK2 as well, though MK3 was pretty slow.

well ive tried a few older versions of mame gone back as far as 0.70 command line version of mame, and my frame rates in mortal kombat are around35/53 which seems poor, done all the above and cant seem to get it any better?? help

MaximRecoil:
Try v.55

Your graphics card as little to do with MAME performance.  128MB is total overkill.

Here's a tip for you: on lower-end systems it has been noted on some midway hardware that frameskip actually adds quite a bit of overhead to game performance (calculating the frameskip per frame adds more overhead than it elliminates by skipping frames!).  Mortal Kombat is a good example of this.  Turn auto-frameskip OFF and you'll see your framerate climb quite a bit.

I've played MAME in the 0.5X era on a Celeron 566 overclocked to 850MHz (essentially a Coppermine PIII-850 with 1/4 cache) and managed the full 53fps without any dramas.  Ensure you have vsync and auto-frame-skip turned off.  You should easily get full frames with that sort of setup.
