Help guys, I'm a bit lost after update

I built my MAMECab here back a few years ago.....thanks to everyones help its been up and running.

A little while back, I decided to upgrade everying to mame version 89.   Thats the version I have on the box now.

I run MAME32 because its simple...however I've noticed a LOT of new games in 89....but none of these games seem to work!   Is that the norm, because they aren't listed as NOT WORKING.

Die Hard Arcade says it doesn't have sound...but when I load it up all I get is a red line across the bottom of the screen.   California Speed doesn't seem to register any of my button presses, even when I re-map them after changing them for that particular game...it keeps telling me to hit a RADIO button to proceed, but even with all the buttons mapped nothing happens.    None of the Tekkens or 3D fighters seem to work.

Older CHD's like Area51 fire up fine (unplayable with joystick but thats another matter)..............

One game that did fire up was Soul Caliber 2...only it, like some of the other more strenuous games, have "echoing sound"....where sounds get repeated.....

Are all these the norm for this release or is there some setting I can adjust....I'm out of the mame scene for quite awhile so I'm not sure if this is norm for these games, or if I've got something messed up.

Also some games are firing up completely stretched out or going off the screen, some aren't even centered......wackiness ensues :)

Thoughts? thanks everyone
ps: I imagine some of those games I mentioned are probably unplayable, my MAME pc is a (now ancient) 1.4Ghz Athlon......

Was 089 the newest release at the time when you updated.  Did you use clrmamepro or similar to manage and fix any roms?

Echoing is generally from an under powered system.  Various windows tweaks can help a little by freeing up resources and cpu cycles.  Changing the audio latency in the default game options can help.

Numerous 'non-working' games were changed from test driver status (normally hidden) to normal status, presumably to generate some interest in working on the drivers.  ie there are loads of games that won't work.

BTW I think you are mistaken and fired up Soul Calibur (not 2) ;)
