NFL picks
« on: July 18, 2005, 01:00:04 am »
I just want to see what kinda members we have here, pick from these running backs as to the one you would pick in a draft if you had to pick any.

Make sure you say who you picked and why in your post.

I know the correct answer.

Are you speaking of a first pick?

Actually it will be the fourth round.  These guys will all be available since Tommy plays at a regional center for the mentally challenged.  They all picked packers regardless of position.  How many TD's will Torrance Marshall pick up this year?  Only time will tell.

Edit** oh yeah, I took LT.  He's consistant and a bad ass,  but I haven't played in a few years.

These are all based on the idea that this is for a #1 #1 pick, seeing as how you didn't let us know what this was for, just a general "who would you pick".  I wasn't sure at first if you meant for a blind date, so thanks for clearing that up.

  • P. Holmes - Old, a tad beaten up, and coming off ANOTHER injury - Not the guy I'd pick
  • E. James - Decent back, but in the wrong setup.  Any team OTHER than one with Peyton at QB and he'd be da bomb - MAYBE
  • L. Tomlinson - They'll be relying on him heavily YET AGAIN.  He's due for an injury soon.  I don't bet on injuries, but he's a MAYBE for me
  • A. Green - He's gotten the snot beat out of him lately, and he likes to dish it out as well.  He's crested and is starting on the downside of his career - NO
  • R. Williams - Dude needs to work off the Doritos and put the bong down.  IF he were in shape, yes.  I believe his stoner ethic will win out, though - NO
  • C. Martin - Beat up and they're looking to use someone else more (for WHAT reason, I have NO idea, since all he does is get yards) and they already DO use others at the goal line - MAYBE, but prolly on the no pile
  • J. Bettis - This dude actually GOT that "one last good year" last year.  A DEFINITE no
  • D. McAllister - inconsistent performer at best.  NO!
  • J. Lewis - Prison gave him nothing BUT time to get prepared, which he seemingly did, but I find him to be like Green - on the top of the downside of his career - definite possibility, but just a maybe
  • C. Portis - Young and dumb, speed to burn, and a coach willing to ride him.  I think you see him break out even MORE this year with that first learning year under his belt.  I'd take him in a heartbeat.

In a league last year, I had Martin, McAllister, and Dillon, with Chris Brown as a backup!  I'd take 'em all again, but if I had the first pick, I'd take Portis.  LT is to many a clear choice, but I seriously believe he'll get injured this year, as I believe they'll be giving  the million-dollar kid a shot.  They simply can't afford to let that kid sit on the bench anymore.

Oh, and Dillon is the  guy to go with.  Is there a reason you included a now-second-stringer in Bettis but left off the starting running back for the Super Bowl Champs?  I can understand leaving off every Giant RB, but to leave Dillon off kinda leads me to believe monkeybomb is on to something.

Can't list them all, i wouldn't read too much into it.

I would also list T.Barber, C. Dillon, D. Staley, R. Johnson, T. Henry, S Alexander, some still need to find teams or get resigned.

Seriously, I looked at that list and was like "uh, no Dillon, but he has Ricky Williams?"

Dillon before any back in the NFL today.  You won't find a tougher back, a back more suited to his offense, or a back with more talent around him.  How many other teams have a 1600 yard back that is NOT their first option?

If i'm going to pick a RB i'm looking for the best possible back on a team with a horrible QB, J. Lewis or C. Portis.

Erm, that's some terrible logic.  That means the D can focus entirely on stopping that back.  Sure, the back is going to get 35 carries a game, but he's also going to miss 5 games due to injury and average 3.4 yards a carry.

You want a back that has some weapons around him so that the D can't stack the line on him.  Do you think Faulk could have run up the numbers he did if he was on the Browns?  Look at Corey Dillon last year... all those years, the only weapon in Cincinnati, at 1100 every year.  They put a much older Dillon on the Pats, BAM, nearly 1700.

Some of what you said is true, but why would i take E. James when Manning is going to throw for 50 TD's.

Because James is going to catch 6 of them himself, and he's still going to score 10 on the ground.

Manning isn't going to throw 49 again, believe that.  Teams are going to knock the crap out of his receivers and make James beat them.  He's getting older.

Ricky Williams will be in shape, but he won't be the Ricky Williams of 3 years ago.  Running backs have a very small window of the top of their game and Williams' is past his window.  He's not even going to be their full time halfback, just watch.

mo....this gets better and better ;D

How many games does Ricky have to sit out if he comes back?  Is it 4?  I can't remember if he appealed or if the league says you've gotta start serving right away even if you DO appeal....tough stuff.

And yah, the same reasoning behind the Dolphins RB is the same reason I believe LT will get hurt this year.  That million-dollar bonus-baby QB they drafted WILL start at some point this year, and I bet LT gets hurt soon after.

I also have a feeling that Alexander is gonna have a monster year too.  Any predictions on how Jackson is gonna do replacing Faulk this year?  I'm betting 700-800 yards, mebbe 6-7 TD's, and a BUNCH of fumbles ;D

Taken from ESPN.com:

While everyone seems enamored by the return of running back Ricky Williams -- who will only be a backup at best this season -- the real story is what the Dolphins have at quarterback.

I heard today that there's a POSSIBILITY that since Ricky sat out last year and DID NOT retire, the NFLPA is trying to get that to count for his suspension time.

Is there a doubt in ANYONE'S mind that the only reason Ricky Williams is playing this year is that he can't afford to pay the Dolphins back the money he would owe them?

I'd LOVE to see what an 8 million dollar bong looks like ;D

I can't see why the dolfucks would even consider having him back, get your money back and tell him to eff off. The way he just up and went  and ruined there 04 season they should drown him in the cold tub.  ;D

Yeah, but the problem is, he didn't retire.  Depending on how his contract is written, he very well MAY be able to sit out a year, but as long as he's under contract to them, if he doesn't retire, he may be doing this to piss 'em off and make 'em cut him - in which case, he doesn't have to pay back the money if he's cut.

See what I mean?

I believe he somehow managed to smoke so many Cheech & Chong sized doobies that he's realized he's gotta play at least one more season so he can afford to live his lifestyle. for the rest of his life.  Of course, he did the math in his head while he was stoned, so he's really only able to live the Rasta life for another 2 years at the rate he smokes, plus he'll have to make up for the time he lost staying clean for one more season...so mebbe a year and a half ;D

In a situation where you owe the cash, but don't actually HAVE the cash, the only other option is to spend the night washing dishes to pay for it.  That's what he is doing.  I mean, sure, he was paid 8mil, but after taxes, what do you think he actually received?  5mil?  4mil?  Do you think the IRS is going to return his income taxes so he can pay the Dolphins off?  That is probably why he's back, he didn't actually receive 8mil so he can't return 8mil to begin with.  His agent sure isn't going to return the agent fees...

Ricky Williams will not have to miss any games and will be in camp.

The Dolphins are going to use RW and let RB sit and learn(or at least not play all that much) unless RW is not productive. IMO

RB don't have to learn the ropes.  They have to learn the play calls and hit the holes.  Top 5 RBs don't sit, they start right away.  RB is all about athletic ability and speed, there's a lot less thinking and analysis than at the other skill spots.

I don't gamble.  Just something I do not do.

You could help your case by showing us an example of a top 5 selection RB that started his rookie season on the bench.  I bet it would be pretty hard to find if you could even do it.

I prefer to look at it like this:

Some folks know what they're talking about, and are confident their words make their case.  Others can't make their case or haven't thought it out well enough and prefer to piss money away because there's always a 50% chance of being right. ::)

I prefer to do a bit of both with Fantasy Football.  Other than that (or my Spot Game, which isn't a gamble if you pay attention and have some time on your hands) gambling is simply not what I consider a fun way to spend money.

"Gambling" away $150 a year doesn't even appeal that much to me, that's why I make sure I know more about setting up a website and being a fair decision-maker so they make me commish and I don't have to pay the league fee or pay a reduced rate.   ;)

Yeah, well you put Bettis AND Ricky in your poll while leaving out the SUPER BOWL CHAMPION'S RUNNING BACK, so it isn't really fair, since you're just sitting in the room with Ricky getting a contact buzz.

I'd have mentioned one of the other gazillion though.  I can't let a good opportunity to pick on you go wasted ;)

Oh, and if he'd gotten 1600 on the Bangles, I certainly WOULD have mentioned it.  Have I mentioned that I started him the day he set the record ;D
