Trying to pick a monitor. TOTALY CONFUSED!!

YEA, YEA, OK, I know what your going to say: Buy the book (Project Arcade), read up on monitors at Mame World or the Ultimarc FAQ's page. Well I have The book and done that, and now I am totally confused.
    Basically, I want a 27" for a cocktail table.

First I was going to get a WG D9200 But $530.00 OUCH!

Then I was thinking about a cheaper 27" 15/25KHz monitor from Sharpimage.com  (alot cheaper)

Next, I am thinking about buying a 15KHz because the Ultimarc.com FAQ's page makes it seem like a 15KHz monitor is the way to go. (This is even cheaper)

Now, I am just banging my head against the wall!!! (This is free)

Ultimarc makes it sound like ya can do it all with a 15KHz set up. I wish this was true. IS IT? What games wont I be able to play.

And YES, I was planing to use the Ultimarc VGAcard.
Also, this monitor will be used only for MAME.

with a regular 15khz monitor you won't be able to do the non-interlaced 640x480 that the d9200 is capable of.  The arcadevga doesn't do 25khz anyway so you don't need to worry about that at all.  Its nice to run vector games at 640 x 480 on the d9200 but you can still do that interlaced with the arcadevga.  If cost is a concern, go with the standard 15khz.

Regardless, I guess a hundred or two in the long run isn't that much. Its just that the monitor is my biggest expense, and I am excited about finishing my cocktail cab. The price difference would set me back a month or two. I suppose , in the long run I will be glad I waited.

Also, Tempest (vector game) is one of my favorite games. If it sucks with a 15KHz monitor, then I will just have to save up.

I read on retro blast that the aVGA could simulate 25khz or am i mistaken? Im trying to decide which monitor to get and is it really worth aying for a multisync when your using an aVGA? what would ou use the 31khz setting for anyway?

 the 27" monitor really only adds 5" in length and width to the overall dimensions of the top.  This makes it the same size as the new Namco Ms. Pac Galaga reunion tables.

FIRST, Yo Whamo dude, Ill probably be sending you a few emails throughout my build. Your setup has probably the best design have seen so far. I hope to build a cocktail similar to yours. IT TOTALLY KICKS SERIOUS BUTT.

    Let me get this straight. If I buy a 15KHz arcade monitor, I will need a Ultimarc VGA card.
    If I buy a WG D9200, I wont need a VGA card.

It seems like I will spend the same amount of cash either way
Yet, I think I remember a review at Retroblast.com where the guy was using a multi sync monitor and a VGA card.

with the d9200 you don't *need* the avga, you want it.  It lets you run the games at 15khz in their original resolution without any stretching.  You can also use advmame with a regualar video card to do the same thing.  (this is what I do)  Advmame can be tricky to set up though.

Well a 27" monitor is a beast. I don't know if it's such a good idea for a coktail cabinet. But if that's what you want to do, check this out:

It's less than half the price of a d9200. It seems there's always 1 being sold somewhere on ebay. Shipping might suck, but no more than any other large monitor.

I'm using the exact same one in my next project. If you need any tips on de-casing it just ask.

They were usually 19'' on midway coctail cabs and usualla 13'' on atari, taito etc.
