Soldering stations
« on: June 03, 2005, 03:55:30 pm »
I'm so tired of my awful Radio Shack soldering iron, so I've been thinking of getting a real soldering station.  Hunting around USENET I glommed on to the idea that the Hakko 936-12 would be the thing to getl they go new for about $80-$100.  However, I notice that the Weller WLC100 is available at Sears for $49.99.  (It's listed on their site as a Cooper WLC100 ; I guess Cooper is Weller's parent company.)  Does anyone have any opinions on these two irons, especially the WLC100, for doing arcade cabinet-type work?

Thanks!

I like the Weller units...They are easy to find, reliable, and easy to get replacement tips for.  I don't know the other brand though...

I use the Elenco SL-5 soldering stand and an Elenco SR-6 iron.

I have the WLC100, it's a good unit.

I got mine from http://www.mcminone.com.  When I got it there was a $13 rebate, bringing the cost to $29.99.  I don't know if it's still available.

Looks like the rebate still exists, and I can use it on the one from Sears as well... thanks for the tip!
