Arcade VGA vertical refresh freqs?
« on: April 24, 2005, 11:02:30 am »
I have not purchased an arcade vga but I have done some reading on it and I am aware that it has most of the resolutions needed for mame built in.  The question I have is regarding vertical refresh rates.  From what I can tell you are restricted to running at 60Hz for most of the built in resolutions which would not be arcade accurate for games like pacman that run at 60.60606.  If this is true is there any remedy for this?

Arcade games use hundreds of different resolutions. AVGA supports about 20 of the most common ones.

If that isn't good enough you need to create your own modes with tools like powerstrip or advancemame.

But, you can't display all games "arcade accurate" whatever you do due to limitations and settings on the monitor (e.g. you can only control the vertical size of the display from the monitors controls or OSD).

That is larely correct, but you can play all games on the ArcadeVGA. Not all will be displayed at native resolutions but the ones that have a close resolution (ie most games) will display albeit with small borders top/bottom.
Most games are 60 Hz and for these, the ArcadeVGA has 60 Hz modes and these are accurate to 2 decimal places. It also has a couple of 53 Hz modes so most are covered.
