My civic is more UB3R than YOURS!!!
« on: April 19, 2005, 03:51:40 pm »
Hey all,

My girlfriend got in a minor accident a while ago and is looking to get her hood replaced.  We found a decent hood for her '99 Honda Civic for around $100, but people want $300 to paint it the same color as her car, Hunter Green!! I can't believe it's that expensive!

What's a reasonable price for this?  Am I off the wall thinking that's too expensive?

Yikes.. I wonder if it's worth it to trade it in as it is instead of spending $400 to replace to hood and hope it raises the value of the car $400, at least!

I agree thats high.

If you don't want to pay for getting it painted.  Then I would look for a civic hood that matches the colour of your girlfriends civic.

And no it won't raise the value $400.

Thanks for the info!  I'm just going to tell her to just get the hood and not worry about the color.

This is a used hood, I assume? If so $300 sounds about right for a good job. If it were new it would be somewhat less as there is less prep work involved.

Yeah, used hood.  $300 is just too much to spend on a car she's just going to trade in anyway.. Unless she were to get a significant return on it.. which it doesn't seem like will happen.

Just leave the black hood on it, thats how some of the honda racers leave there hoods when the buy a new one to reduce weight.

That only works if it's a carbon fiber hood though.

How much is the carbon fiber hood? Just buy that.

Or, really if you are trading it in then don't buy anything, they are gonna rip you a new one on the trade in anyway, no reason to invest.

If you want a cheap, crappy job you can always find someone willing to accomidate you. As I said, $300 sounds right for quality workmanship.

Oh and you could very easily expect to pay more than the cost of a steel hood plus the cost of having it painted for a carbon fiber hood. Those things are not cheap.

yeah whatever hood you got used for $100 is NOT carbon fiber.  I was just saying that the black hood/painted car looks is the "cool" thing to do for ricers.  That cool looking hood and 15lb weight reduction turns your Civic into a 10 second car... duh!!!    :P

Look at it this way.  If you don't fix the hood and place a different colour hood on the car.  The car will be worth much less then a similar civic during trade in.

And of course if you stick a four foot tall spoiler and an exhaust pipe the size of a coffee can on there you instantly transform any car into a race car.  Add 10 HP for every decal you apply to the exterior. 15 HP if they are in Japanese. ;)

and the spoiler makes sure you car stays on the ground... since it's so powerful thanks to your decals that you're likely to just take off the ground at any moment.

CF hoods should be one of the last things that you do though... there is no need to scrape a few pounds of weight reduction the day you get your car.  I'm not saying you did mind you.. I'm just going with what I see near me.

- Kid buys bone stock Civic
- Kid adds 200lbs of stereo equipment
- Kid adds 80-100lbs of fugly body kit (often unpainted, which makes them even fuglier)
- Kid gets CF hood and brags how it saves him 50lbs... not noting that the car is effectively 150lbs heavier than stock... and still bone stock performance-wise
- Kid tries to race anything he sees, and comes up with excuses when he gets his @$$ handed to him.

I love those kids though.... the faces they make when I spank them with a 92 Cadillac that weighs roughly 9million pounds is wonderful.

Wow, you're into rhythm games and you're into racing Japanese cars? I think I've lost any shred of respect I had for you. ;)

J/K, my car is probably making all of about 35 HP, I'm sure you'd make me look like a complete idiot if I were dumb enough to go out on the track with you. :)

I for one am not into those 4 banger lawmower engines, but just like any motor done up they are fast, to say 4 bangers are slow is not true.

As for the hood problem in my original post i wasnt saying he should buy a CF hood, i was just getting at that they come painted black and to solve the paint problem ,leave it black so it looks like it was done on purpose for racing.

Mustangs Rule.  8)  8)  8)

I think the 4-banger race thing became so popular because Detroit stopped putting out affordable rear drive V8 cars. No cheap ones at all, and assuming you avoided the ULTRA-HEAVY ones that left you with 2 choices, Camaros and Mustangs.

It IS sort of silly though to buy a $17,000 car and then spend $15,000 more to make it almost on par with a $25,000 car.

I do like suspension and handling mods though, if I was into that scene then that is all I would do, suspension, handling, and brakes. Juicing up the engine just to lose to stock camaros is just silly, and its only useful on the street if you want to drive like a moron, which you cans till do cheaper with a stock Camaro or Mustang.

OMG i just typed this decent sized reply and then it said my pic was too big, and i hit back and it was gone. But anyway the basic jist was, I ran 13.5 last time at the track but since then ive gotten a bunch of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. im definately hitting 12s this summer. but im really more into autocross than dragging

btw, 4g63T engine can easily take 400-500HP on stock internals. DSMs are the v8 slayers, 4 bangers can own v8s, just not those crappy SOHC honduh engines.

Buying a bone stock Civic ------------------------------------------- $15,000

Adding plastic bodyparts, coffee can, CF hood, plastic a-pillar pod with Wal Mart guages, chrome plated air box and strut tower braces...etc. -------I don't know, Ummmm --------------------------------------------------------------------- $5,000

Smoking this Civic owner for three lights in a row in a 93 Taurus with a baby seat in the back, an overweight/balding middleage man who likes to wave, and a bubbly wife with no drag skillz in the drivers seat ------------------------------------------------------ priceless

(ricer owners should learn to look for the initials "SHO" prior to making challenges ;))

My brother regularly smokes ricers with his beaten up Crown Vic.  I mean SMOKES them.

I mean, duh, it was a cop car.

The problem is ricers will race anything that they THINK they can beat... which usually means they go after regular sedans and the like.  They won't think SHO or SVT, they just say.. contour... I can take that.   And god forbid someone built a sleeper with some power as opposed to a decal-clad, bright purple, high winged, monstrosity....

I've actually had a young(er) kid in my town eye me down and rev his engine while I was driving my mother's baby blue 88 Oldsmobile... I rolled down the window and had to ask him "are you serious... you don't feel embarassed trying to race a 15+ year old OLDSMOBILE"

He wasn't happy with my statement.  I got a laugh out of it though.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.
