button order question

Is there a standard for what order the buttons should be in on a 6 button Street Fighter - type set up.  I was thinking:

1 2 3

The top 3 are the punches - light, medium, heavy and the bottom 3 are the kicks.

However, this config will require remaping the buttons w/in mame for the neogeo games. I was thinking of doing this to try to avoid the hassle:

Any ideas as to the validity of this setup (i.e. confort level and practicality of it)?


And a little off topic.... I've see people setting up their cp to have multiple coin buttons (p1 coin, p2 coin, etc).  My question is can you simply go with just 1 single coin button?  I think all of the games I've played will allow a community pool of credits (p2 can use the money inserted by p1). Is this not true for all the games in mame? If not, can they not just simply remap mame to have 1 key register as coin buttons for all players? I'm having trouble understanding why many would put in "extra" buttons on their cp.

Practicality is great, comfort level is fine for SF, probably bad for classics.  Basically, it depends on what you play the most.  I have plenty of inputs for (really 9) buttons per player, and I use:

   4  5  6
   1  2  3
7

But I play mostly Classic games.  For SF, I could easily change the in-game key assignments so I had a

  4 5 6
X

Layout.

For Neo-Geo, I use the buttons as labelled for the standard games (only a few NG fighters (which I don't play)) used 4 buttons.  For these, I could easily remap the in-game assignments so I was using:

The best example is Gauntlet.  Players 1 through 4 were assigned special characters.  If you want to be character 3 (say the Valkyrie), you HAVE to put a coin in player 3's slot, not any of the other slots.  Having 1 key register as coin buttons for all players won't work either as if you wanted to continue a 2-player game and inserted a coin, you would now be in a four-player game.  (I'm not sure you would have the other players active if you didn't press start, but the game would at least show "Press start to continue", and I'm not sure the game would ever end.

There were other games with similar problems.

Finally, there was a two-player version of Gauntlet that let's you select characters, but I'm not sure if it works with only one coin slot, and it won't help if you have more than two players.
