4 way joystick games (Number of buttons?)

(1/2) > >>

Bones:
I am in the final stages of drafting my CP on cardboard and need some help!

For 4 way joystick games, is there any good reason why I would need more than 2 buttons?

I have done a search which has returned the below list. This search was generated searching for 4 way joystick games with greater than 2 buttons. jstookey.com link

Battlecry
Chinese Hero
Croquis (Germany)
Dai Ressya Goutou (Japan)
Forty-Love
Karian Cross (Rev. 1.0)
KO Punch
Las Vegas Girl (Girl '94)
Logic Pro 2 (Japan)
Mouse Trap (version 3)
Punch-Out!!
Reikai Doushi (Japan)
Street Heat - Cardinal Amusements
Super Punch-Out!!
Tutankham
Zero Zone

Here is a quote regarding the above info- "It relies on Mame's --listinfo command line function, which gives a flawed and limited representation of many games." I have delete ROM names

So my questions is (finally)- At a glance, can anybody spot any errors in the above or notice any 4 way games using more than two buttons that may be missed?

Knowing this list is accurate will help me make the important 2 or 3 button decision. At the moment I am leaning towards 2 buttons as I honestly don't recognize any of the above titles.

Thanks  :)

*Edit:Spellinging......

paigeoliver:
That list is almost entirely bad information, most of those listed games are 8-way or Mahjong and a lot of them only have 1 or 2 buttons. One of them is a freaking dualjoy 8-way.

Mouse Trap really DOES have 4 buttons. As do the punch out games, but those are twin monitor games and look really crappy in mame, so most people don't put them on their cabs.

Forty Love apparently has 4 buttons and truly IS a 4-way game, and it is also the single worst unplayable tennis title ever made.

Bones:
2 buttons it is.

I think this is a good example of using this board for confirming some of the information out there. I could have easily wasted my time (and CP space) putting in 3 or even 4 buttons thinking I was going to get more "playability". Even with endless research when you think you have it all worked out, a simple question in these forums can give unexpected results.

paigeoliver, your a bloody legend. Thanks mate.  ;)

Matt Berry:
I know your question is only about 4-way games but you may want to consider that some of the 2-way games use more then 2 buttons. Take  asteroids for example, 5 buttons total - 2 for left right (easily substituted by joystick) and 3 player buttons, shoot, thrust , shield (or disappear). So you may want to double check any 2 way games you want to play before making the decision on only 2 buttons vs 3 or 4.

paigeoliver:
People generally play their heavy button 2 way games with their 8-way setups.
