20" TV with Composite only <EDIT> now w/components!
allroy1975:
I will be using a TV as a monitor for my 2nd cab, so I'm interested in the input of this thread.
I just wanted to chime in here and say how much I HATE it when people answer questions like PO did in this situation.
There is no less helpful or arrogant way to repsond to a question than like that. When someone asks "what is the best way to do X" the answer is NEVER "don't do X".
Yeah, we've decided to use TVs. We know there are other (maybe better or worse) ways to do it. We've made a decision and he's asking the BEST way to do it.
Talking Octopus' responce was much better. It gave his experience with different settings and said that there are better options.
I have just had so many experiences when I say "this is what I'm doing, can someone help?" and the responces you get are "don't do that" and it's not helpful at all and it's very frustrating.
okay, I'm done. BTW, on my 35" sony that I play all my classic console games on, I have an old ATI AIW Pro card and use the S-Video and I wouldn't want to read a whole web page on it, but the text doesn't look that bad. It's definatly usable. I'm thinking about getting another ATI something like an 8500 or something.....

I'm using a TV for my first one (when I get the money) because it's similar enough to an arcade screen without the associated limitations. TVs are getting better, and computer monitors are too expensive at the sizes that look right. I'm not going to have some ultra-sharp screen that makes older games look like crap, and is only 17 inches when I could get something that better recreates the experience, is 25 inches, and is much cheaper. I know a lot of people use computer monitors, but throwing such a tiny screen in an arcade cab just doesn't look right IMO.

Just wanted to let everyone know, I took the advice from you guys, and alot from http://www.oscarcontrols.com/monitors.shtml , and returned the 20" composite and got a 20" Daewoo Flat with Components! I didnt even know they made 20"s with components, but Best Buy had it at $149.99 with a $20 mail in to bring you to $129.99.
Heres a pic of it:
Has S-Video and composites as well, so maybe Ill even end up throwin in my Dreamcast or something =)

I know that 20" is not an HDTV or HDTV-ready TV, but if it were an HDTV/ready TV, shouldn't you be able to hook up your PC to the component inputs (via an RGB to component cable) and get the same quality resolution as a PC monitor? Isn't 480p or 1080i resolution very similar to what PC monitors can do?
Anyway, I've tried briefly a couple of times to hook my PC up in this manner to my big screen tv and never had any luck getting a high resolution image of the PC on the TV. But, it should be possible, right?

Question, are the composites/S-video just on the front of the unit or are they duplicated on the back?
One would think it wouldn't be fun to have to route a cable to the front of the TV to feed the signal.
