Easiest Frontend To Set Up?
« on: May 30, 2004, 02:50:17 pm »
Hi all

I just got my cabinet and I have been using Mame32 on my computer.  But when everything get's installed in the cabinet I would like to get a frontend.  What do you think is the easiest frontend to set up.  I don't have much experience using command line versions of MAME.  Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks

Jason

Try Kymaera, it's a snap to set up.

or you can try MameWah or Gamelauncher, both are very nice front-ends.

Normally I don't get involved but....

pmf is a little biased as he wrote kymera.

It's not a snap to setup at all, actually it's quite difficult to setup, if by setup you mean get it tweaked the way you want it and running with more than just mame, with your own custom skin, ect.  Now getting it to run mame with all the default options is quite easy of course.  It's not unlike my own fe in that respect.

Don't misunderstand my point though, Kymera is by far one of the easier one's to setup.  But there is a difference between getting a fe to run and getting it fully integrated into the theme of your cabinet and properly interfaced with all of your software.

The truth is there is no such thing as a easy to setup fe.  It's a myth.  Any fe that is really easy to setup doesn't have enough options to satisfy the average user who wants more than a gamelauncher style interface.  Any fe that has a lot of options has that many more configuration tweaks, and therefore is that much more difficult to setup.

I have this belief that a lot of people in today's society lacks anymore:  "Hard work pays off."  What I'm trying to say is don't worry about how difficult the setup is, find a fe that looks good to you and has the features you want and invest the proper amount of time to get it running.  They all work and work well, I can assure you.

I've been the unofficial ambassador for arcade fe's on this board for quite a few years now and I can tell you this:  The fes that are hardest to setup are often the most rewarding once you get them running the way you like them.  3dArcade is my favorite example of this.  Even expert computer users sometimes run into confusion getting it tweaked just the way they want it.  Once you do get it setup, however, you have a full fps environment as well as an equally impressive 2d interface for quick browsing.  It's by far the most graphically impressive fe out there, but you have to work to get it up and running.

Anyway... I'm done ranting.  Long story short, nothing is easy in life, try your hardest at everything and you'll be rewarded in the long run.  :)
