Just Uploading a few bits....
« on: April 26, 2004, 07:46:01 am »
Just to let you all know I am uploading a few bits and pieces to the Arcade Art Library http://www.localarcade.com/4images/
that I have forensically restored and cleaned up in preparation for Vectorizing.

You will see Zorg and Mahuti have done a few pieces of mine already.

Enjoy!

What process did you undergo to forensically restore & clean them up?

Varies actually, sometimes creating shapes using Photoshops own tools and shape brushes, others creating them from scratch and overlaying shapes till they correctly align.

Colour matching from original pics best I can using the droplet function or using my eye to guage.

Alot of using the Magic wand tool and deleting etc and colour filling.

The Donkey Kong Junior Sideart is a good case in point. I couldnt find a decent picture of the artwork from any source, so I simply used the Flyer from TAFTA and began taking parts apart using the processes above. In fact I used two DK Jnr Flyers to create my final.

Then I simply coloured the parts using known Nintendo colours from other sources.

Came out very nicely. You'd never know it came from a Flyer(s) to start with.

I take it you were the one that originally submitted bubble bobble marquee, punchout marquee, dk jr sideart, etc to CAGA then.

That's cool.

I gave alot of things to Tim, but the problem with CAGA files is that they are not AI and vectorized which is why when I decide to make my arcade cab myself, I want perfect artwork to create same. CAGA still continues to hold rasterized images which is fine for some users but for you and myself, we see the bigger picture and see the huge benefits from using AI.

Which is why I am uploading my work so this can be acheived.

Of course at some point I must start reading Frostilicus's tutorial and do it for myself, although I dont have much time for myself.

I am giving back in the hopes others like Stingray, Frostilicus, Zorg and yourself among others may create some perfect arcade artwork to be proud of on any arcade cab be MAME or the real deal.

We already have some excellent Pac-Man sideart traced up there (by Tom Bombaci) so I downloaded it, backed it up and removed it from the server (to conserve my disk usage which I get dinged for from time to time.

MS Pac-Man however... that's excellent. That is probably the #1 most needed piece.

Tom Bombaci might do something with that. I'll check with him.

After looking at the ms. pac man piece, I think it too, will have to come down. :(

It looks like it was based off of the ms pac-man flawed character art that is up on Localarcade right now. Nobody would need to trace it, and if they did, they'd be tracing from an incorrect sample.

Oh well, no fear. I have some high-res photos of a ms pac-man cabinet (and I plan to get more soon... I just hope they don't kick me out of the theatre for taking them.)

You need some hi res of the marquee?  I just picked one up a week ago.

Edit: I uploaded it, but put it in the wrong section.  Can you fix that?

Mahuti,

I havent seen a full up close versin of an original Ms Pac-man otherwise I woudl have tried to correct it.

My version is very very very very close to "TWO BITS" (http://www.twobits.com/parts/mpsideart.jpg version which is the only company that is allowed by licence to reproduce NAMCO classic Sideart.

See below:-

Welllll, be that as it may, it wasn't a case of correction. I don't know where you got the side art for ms pac-man, but it is very flawed.  It was obviously either the source for, or based on the same Ms. Pac-Man character art posted on localarcade. The character art on localarcade for ms pac-man, is very poorly done. I don't know why I haven't taken it down yet. Everything else up there is very accurate, or at least very well done & professional. The Ms. Pac-Man character art is not good and very amateur. The arrangement of the characters you uploaded may be correct, but the Ms. Pac-Man art on it is not.

At any rate, none of that is important, and I don't fault you for posting it. It's not your job to worry about it. I appreciate you uploading what you have, and I would love for you to continue. I take a look at everything that goes up, and I moderate it to ensure that only the best stuff stays up. In some cases, that means even removing my own work if someone has corrected & reuploaded it. To me, this is not about who gets credit, it's only about sharing great classic artwork.

Again, thanks for posting, and I look forward to future contributions.

CN,

No problem at all! I havent taken offence, I totally understand when it comes to authentic artwork.

If I can help restoring or cleaning decent quality images I will.

Having a look at your images, the images I used must have come from your site, though the ones I used were in JPEG format but obviously from the same source.

I am here to help eveyone here where ever possible.
