What joystick(s) should I get?

<< < (5/6) > >>

Doc-:
I'd love to install the Happs galaga in my existing cabinet but unfortunately there is zero room for an adaptor plate (the existing layout is already tight) and I have a wood panel.   I would have to cut and wire a completely new panel to do it.

I do have just enough room for any of the regular joysticks.

Any opinions on a Wico 4-way leaf switch stick?  I've seen some positive feedback in the past - and I may be able to get one from a friend.

I mounted my "happs galaga" without a mounting plate. I guess you need a router to do it though.

See Oscar's drawing of how to mount it It does need something to cover it up though. Like plexi/lexan or (as in my case) a thin sheet of MDF.

PaulG:
In defense of the T-Stik Plus (I ordered just before the "quit" microswitches were available. Like 1 day.), I don't think they require a lot of force to play.  I also like the short throw because they're great for the older games (and shooters).  I'll occassionally play a Capcom fighter, but because I suck so badly, if the joystick is less than ideal, I'm clueless about it.

DeathDealer:
I like the T-stick, they have a solid feel to them.
I also have 2 happ joy stick, and to me they feel too soft, I have a super and a ultimate and they both feel kind of soft to me, but my friend like the feel of the happ,  I think it's all about what you like its your Cab.

Ok, here is my 7 cents.

I own (or have owned) all of the following "4-way" joysticks.

Ms. Pac/Galaga reunion stick
True Wico 4-way
Wico 8-way with 4-way actuator.
Q*bert (I THINK it is a qbert stick, the raised bezel area is the EXACT size of said area on my NOS qbert overlay).
Universal 4-way (the ones used in the Mr. Do! series in the early 80s, not the same as the Happ model of the same name).
Happ's Universal (switches between true 4-way and 8-way operation).
Happ's super in 4-way mode.
Unknown bat top happs in 4-way mode (this is either competion or ultimate, unsure as to which).
ATW 4-way (resembles Atari 2600 stick).
Nintendo 4-way (Popeye, Donkey Kong, etc)

The Ms. Pac/Galaga replacement stick is number one with a bullet. Easily the best all around stick in the bunch. Some other sticks might be better for specific games, but nothing beats this one as an all around stick.

The true wico 4-way would be second place.

Followed by the Q'Bert stick.

Followed by the Mr. Do! Universal stick (nice stick, but has long throw and soft springs, not really suited to the pac games, but great for Mr. Do games.

Followed by the Nintendo 4-way (clunky feeling).

Happ's Universal in true 4-way mode. Would rate higher, but this one loses points for having a noticeably longer throw in 4-way mode, not bad overall though.

Followed by the ATW 4-way. (very exact, and shortest throw I have ever seen, but the handle is not comfortable to hold, and it shatters microswitches under hard use).

Next up are the also rans in order of 4-way preference. All of these suffer from either lack of diamond pattern and dead zones.

Classic wico with 4-way actuator.
Happs super in 4-way mode.
Other happs in 4-way mode.

Also, someone mentioned Kangaroo earlier, which is an 8-way game, not a 4-way game, you wouldn't be able to pass the second screen without an 8-way (you literally wouldn't, as several diagonal movements are required on that screen).
