Star Wars Cockpit build from scratch
« on: August 24, 2026, 01:32:45 pm »
I was very active in the arcade building scene about 10 years ago, but sold my CNC, planning to get a better one, but the money went elsewhere SOML!  Fast forward to about 3 months ago, I saw an ad for an old 4x8 Shop Bot CNC.  Went to look at it and saw it was 30 years old, did not work and needed major upgrades to make it usable with modern software. Offered the guy a reasonable offer, and loaded it up.  Hardware upgrade took about 30 days.

My test cut was a simple 10" circle. Made a few adjustments, then right into building one of my Holy Grail machines, the Star Wars cockpit arcade, with a twist. I widened the code about 4 inches to fit a newer style monitor. The plan is to build a machine that plays the original SW game, but also many other flying/space games, maybe even some racing games too.

I've been collecting parts for years for this build, so I have everything I need. Currently, in the slow process of mounting panels with glue and screws, clamping and waiting 24 hours for the glue.  Then repeat, night after night! The other thing that takes some time on this build is the 100' of t-molding required to make it look right.  Some of it is super tricky too, like the overhead frame.

Here are the parts I am using:
-Monitor is a 180mhz 32" curved screen.  Screen will also have a curved Lexan panel - to mimic the look of a real aircraft canopy/and protect the screen from beverage-induced mayhem that seems to plague my machines!
-GRS Flight Yoke.  Super versatile with 6 buttons, can be used for many games.
-Old set of Need for Speed GT pedals.  Adding these to the build just in case I decide to throw some driving games on it.
-Hydro Thunder Throttle. Sure I could use the foot pedals for aircraft throttle, but that would be weird. So I have the frame of an old HT throttle, but the handle is missing, so I am building one.

Will add more pictures of the process of building it later, but here is an almost up to date photo of  the build.

One of the best cab designs ever (IMO).

How accurate are the drawings/measurements you are using?  I haven't followed anyone building one of these for a long time.
