Discs of Tron Upright scratch build
« on: April 05, 2025, 10:07:06 am »
I am embarking on a new build, Discs of Tron upright, I’ll be trying to stay as original as possible.  I’ll use a crt, and need to figure out just about everything, I have a friend that has an original machine that I am going to borrow to be able to copy all the panels and measurements.

I am going to purchase all of the metal and artwork before I get completely started. So I will be looking for parts for a bit before I get going.  Any help locating monitor, brackets and control panel brackets and the original disc of Tron wheels, which I believe are the same wheels that were used on Tron possibly

I believe the same control panel brackets that were used on Tron may have been used in other midway games.

This old game is making artwork, but some of it isn’t source-able through them, the inner art that goes above the monitor needs to be located as well as the flat art piece that goes above the round black light

Any help locating the parts that I need that I can purchase would be much appreciated so I can get started :-)

A replica of that Cab... will be a real Challenge... and likely, a bit costly.

If you like that game... Why not go all out, and make an Environmental Cabinet version?

 Environmental Cabinet has:

A very comfy backrest, that you lean back against. Sort of like a Standing-Seat, that conforms to your back shape
Actual Surround Sound  (has additional speakers in the rear of the cabinet)
Superior Acoustics, and a better Feeling of Immersion, due to the partial enclosure
Superior Cabinet artwork and additional Lighting Effects  (Flashing light panels above. Black-Light lit Artwork panels near the Floor)

A very Long time ago... I had scanned my Collector friends DOT Environmental Artwork.  The Scans of the Internal Artwork, were
sent to Mame devs... and they eventually got added to Mame.

Unfortunately, when I scanned these in... I didnt have a very good computer, nor a very good scanner.  As such, resolution was
kind of Low... AND... I got a lot of odd Specs in my scans, that I had to hand-edit out.  I wasnt very good at photo-editing either,
so some of the color edits were not the best.

As such... If you have access to your buddies Artwork... I highly advise getting a modern High Resolution scan... and then, submitting
it to replace the existing mame scan.

You might also look into various Professional Printing operations... to make sure you are getting high quality replications.
Some of the existing Artwork thats offered today... is often full of editing mistakes, and incorrect color choices...

The biggest thing about the Artwork with  Discs of Tron... is that you Need artwork thats been printed with Ultraviolet Paint, that
will Glow brightly under Black-Light.   Not sure if Currently available artwork, has UV reactive Inks, in their Prints.  To get such prints,
you might need to have actual custom made "Screen-Printing" done.   Especially if you get the Environmental cabs Clear-Plastic artwork
panels replicated.

As far as the build goes... If I had the ability to do this, the one thing I might change... is to make a
Translucent UV red/pink Spinner Knob... to replace the Black spinner knob.   Or maybe UV Orange,
for even more "Pop".

Id also add a few Bass-Shaker Transducers, and place them behind the Seat, and or under the flooring.
Those things are fantastic, for "Feeling" various things in the game... and unlike typical subs, they dont
make audible sound (allowing for maximum vibrations, without having to disturb the neighbors)

The DOT E.  also had some flashing lights when you lost a Life.  These were a little Dim for my tastes.
Id probably try to add some powerful Strobe Lights in the cab, to increase the effect.  Maybe place them
in the Ceiling, slightly behind the player, and add a orange Color-Gel filter, to slightly reduce the intensity levels.

Best of Luck on the Project

All good points, thank you so much!  A couple of issues that I’m dealing with…. Space, at this time I do not have the space for the environmental.  Parts and ability to copy…

I have an opportunity to borrow an upright to be able to copy. A lot of parts for both machines are proprietary and or really difficult to locate, I will be able to remove parts from the original that I’m borrowing and be able to copy those with my friends machine shop.

I’m ready for the challenge, I build pinball machines (not virtual pins) from nothing, I built cosmotrons, and Pac-Man battle Royale recently, so thankfully I’ll ride with experience and muscle memory :-)

Thisoldgame.com does quality art, I think I will get a good quality product.  However, there are pieces they don’t produce, so that will be a fun challenge.

If I can add lighting in between the speakers and the panel, I’ll add the extra lighting effects hopefully to the cabinet that way ???

I plan to use a quality sound system with bass, I’m very excited to get to that part!!
