RGB moded tv vs real arcade monitor. Whats the diference?
« on: June 26, 2024, 02:26:49 pm »
I wonder, im tired of arcade chassis breaking real easy, of course I know its because they are old, and the Chinese new ones , they break if you look bad at them hahahaha, anyway, I think rgb TVs are a great replacement for those monitors, as my mortal eyes cant seem to find a difference between them, I wonder if any experts can tell me what the difference is beside arcade monitors being more easy to play with whenever you need to adjust vertical or horizontal  image. I found that Samsung TVs are easy to work with and with groovy name , they are a great thing to replace arcade monitors. Please educate me.

Looking at the long term, maintenance is the key issue. Every TV is both more complicated than a monitor and is different to the next TV.

Arcade monitor chassis are really very simple and are well understood, so are easier to repair when things go wrong. Or at least easier to get repaired by someone else, at a time when these skills are disappearing. Finding someone to repair CRT TVs is hard these days.

This is why I've been quietly teaching myself to repair TVs over the past decade or more.

It helps if you use TVs that have similar design architecture (like your Samsungs). Later model (~1995-2005) asian-brand CRT TVs all have a relatively simple and similar design with the same basic elements. With some experience you can easily spot all the main areas.

I dont mind real arcade monitors, but they are way too used and old, they simply stop working for pretty much with nothing, while TVs rarely have burn-in, and most chassis after cleaning, look pretty strong compared to arcade chassis.  So in terms of image quality, and besides not having a vertical/horizontal manual adjust, are TVs pretty much the same then?

My goal its to build my last arcade cabinet, the one that's gonna stay with me till I die, and then with my son after, and I want to teach my son (who really likes the hobby) how to repair it from head to toe.  To be honest , those samsung TVs are pretty easy to fix but I know over time even regular TVs or arcade chassis parts would be hard to find, especially the flyback. So I might have to tech him how to repair a crt tv and how to replace the tv with an LCD monitor in case he wont find replacement parts in the future.

But again the question is, in terms of image quality, are they both the same?

Depends on which monitor and which TV. There isn't a presentation monitor that can outdo the image on a 29" Nanao arcade monitor, IMO. Something like a JVC D-series might come close, though. And for 19" the Sega MC-2000S (Kaga Denshi Nanao 20EZ, before Sega rebranding) has a high beam current and normally came with a Mitubishi tube with extra thick phosphor, so it can get really bright. That said, i have a Samsung 19"/48cm TV tube from the early 2000s that is really nice, sharper than my MC-2000s, if not quite as bright even when i'm overdriving it.

I'd really like to find a 19"/20" Ikegami TM10 or later curved glass model, and try that in one of my cabs. Rare as hen's teeth in Aus, and wouldn't be cheap to boot.

You know, back in the 90s, the joke was the J in JVC stood for “junk.”  I’ve had a great deal of confusion from watching the CRT enthusiasts settle on D series as the pinnacle.  For 22 years, I  have been carting around a 27” Panasonic TV that I bought brand new at Circuit City in 2002 for $200 and I have never seen a superior picture.  “Pana-black.” It has been used almost daily since I bought it.  I have something like eight consoles hooked up to it.  Hell, last week I left it on for days and had no idea because the tube is so black even when turned on.  My modern HDR flat screens are beginning to approach it.

Sonys are nice but the big ones have a weird flattened tube that distorts the image.

Sadly,  my neighbors only throw away Dynex TVs which were garbage when brand new.

I think samsung crt tvs are nice , they are bright and they have a nice color display, there are variants under another brand, but I have not find a 19inch yet, I'm really interested in building a couple of cabs to my future grandkids and tech my son how to fix them so the games can stay in working order after I kick the bucket. It would be nice to have my grand children having the arcade spirit on the future.
